Emma Howarth’s commitment to the community and her studies has won her the accolade Oldham’s Student of the Year.

Emma (18), a pupil at Hulme Grammar School for Girls, is a hospice volunteer, has worked at a special needs school and has helped disabled adults as well as working with Age Concern.
The award is presented by the Rotary Club of Oldham.
Jim Stott, of sponsors Warburtons, said: “Student of the Year is a great incentive for youngsters in Oldham to work hard in and out of school.
“I was very impressed with the high standards and commitment shown this year from the nominations.”
Emma, of Springhead, was presented with her award and a £500 computer voucher by the Mayor, Councillor Ann Wingate and Warburtons.
She said: “It is an honour to be recognised for the voluntary work I have done and I am delighted to have won this award. I was not expecting to win.”
The second and third prizes were awarded to Oldham College student Samantha Wagstaff and Oldham Sixth Form College student Kolsuma Khanon who each received a computer voucher worth £100.
Ray Coverley of the rotary club said: “Since setting up the award seven years ago we have seen some shining examples of students who have thoroughly deserved the prize.
“It is our great pleasure to be able to reward youngsters who gives so much back to the community and we hope to continue this for many years to come. We are also grateful to Warburtons for its support.”
