Chaddy’s cup first

CHADDY End FC clinched their first D&J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Challenge Cup at Boundary Park last night.

They defeated Jack Abbott premier division rivals Hunt Lane Tavern 4-2.

After missing out on the league title — they finished runners-up to Legends of Lees — Danny Dorward’s young side achieved ample compensation.

They took the lead after 16 minutes through Tom Hughes, only for Sean Weaver to equalise almost immediately.

Chaddy struck the crossbar, but they were gifted the lead when a Tavern player put the ball through his own net just before the half hour mark.

Ryan Baldwin, who scored seven times in Chaddy’s previous match, extended their advantage after 52 minutes, before he added a fourth with a cheeky chip over the ’keeper’s head.

A stunning long-range half-volley from David Ashworth gave Tavern a glimmer of hope, but Chaddy negotiated the final 10 minutes.

Robert Fielding, who was instrumental for Chaddy, was named man-of-the-match.
