Newton finishes fourth in Lincoln

AFTER breaking his collar bone two months ago, Oldham-based racing cyclist Chris Newton underlined just how well his recovery is going when he took fourth place in the prestigious Lincoln Grand Prix.

Newton, the defending Premier Calendar Series champion, was due to see his consultant this week to review how his injury is healing, but if his form on the bike is anything to go by things look good.
“I’m getting back into it,” said Newton, who had his collar bone plated and is waiting for the bone to knit back together following his accident on March 6.
“To be honest I didn’t feel my shoulder at all.
“I felt good all day at the Lincoln. I missed the first break but after about four laps I jumped across. I didn’t do much of the work because I had to look after myself.
“I wasn’t really thinking about winning, I just wanted the team to do well.
“It was a big field and the roads are narrow, so I just tried to keep at the front on the climbs.”
After his efforts at Lincoln, Newton is due to fly out to Ireland to compete in the eight-day FBD Insurance Ras, which includes more than 160 riders and teams from across the world tackling more than 1,200 kilometres of tough Irish terrain.
Newton won the Ras in 2003 and 2005, and said: “It’s a great race and I hope we go well, but we’ll just have to see what happens.”
