Walsall fight back to beat Latics

A LAST-MINUTE goal from Erhun Oztumer ensured that Athletic remain without a point in Sky Bet League One – despite holding the lead at half-time.

A long throw into the penalty area was not dealt with by the visitors' under-pressure defence and Oztumer stole in to poke home from close range.

Joe Edwards had earlier struck eight minutes after half-time to pulls the Saddlers level.

Edwards fired through a number of bodies after a corner kick was not cleared properly to level up the scores in the 53rd minutes.

Athletic, who made a slow start but ended up having the edge in the first half, took the lead through Ryan McLaughlin on 32 minutes when his teasing cross from the left beat everyone to deceive goalkeeper Mark Gillespie.

Walsall improved markedly after the break and after the equaliser, Oztumer turned one close-range narrowly wide of goal before shaping a left-footed effort against an upright in the 72nd minute, with Amadou Bakayoko failing to hit the target as the rebound was directed to him six yards from goal.

McLaughlin saw a 25-yard effort tipped wide and the very lively Oztumer had an effort somehow scrambled away.

Tope Obadeyi saw his last-gasp header superbly tipped over by Gillespie, but Athletic have now lost their opening three games in league and cup.

in the bottom 4 our normal position , played 3 lost 3 so what's changed ,another hard long season coming again ,midfield cant create nowt , defence rubbish without Ripley ,forwards has beans and Duffers ,what a depressing
state we are in , no investment just hang on and hope

Another grim result and the leaking of goals from set pieces and throw-ins continues. Only the second league game but those warning signs are already becoming a reality. The need for recruitment especially in midfield is essential and unless Simon Corney backs up J.S. then I cannot see where the improvement will come from maybe Dan Gardner and the new Belgian will provide the impetus but the squad will have to up their game considerably.

That makes 5 losses in a row with Wigan next.I wasn't too happy pre season with what I was seeing .No one player in particular to blame. It is about total ability as a team and we are definately found wanting on that score.Midfield strength and guile is a major issue and has not been addressed or it seems likely to be.Hope that I am wrong and it gets sorted soon.Fed up with starts like this.

Let's not be fooled this was a horrible display against the worst Walsall team I have seen. A goal out of the blue from a cross unless McLaughlin decided not to bother trying to give it to Holloway or Davies (I wouldn't have blamed him).
Second half woeful so don't lament Odadeyi header (the highlight of the afternoon).
Shez has big problems Holloway and Davies don't talk and kept as far apart as they could (Davies acting right back at times). Good performances from keeper, McLaughlin and Fawns.

That second half was as bad as anything I've seen in the last 20 years. Pathetic, inept, unfit, ragged and uninterested. At Accrington in the recent friendly we looked a month behind them and the second half today again we looked leggy, tired and lame. What the hell is going on? Start of the season? Wish it was over!

Unlucky lads..move on.Ignore doom & gloom posts..

Those pre-season pessimists have been put in their place. They must be really embarrassed.

Terrible start,3 games 3 defeats, this is all because Shez has not been able to complete his team building, missing a vital deep midfield player which is costing us games. We still have only 1 keeper. Again this is all down to Corney not providing funds to buy players. We are now well behind the likes of Bury, Rochdale and Fleetwood in team building. Crowds will be down, and the Inland Revenue will again be knocking on the door soon.

cant wait for the 20 goal player to start banging them in,

This can't go on it will go on 4 5 6 starting with Wigan there is no money in the club and that is reflected on the field Brian 1946 1st post war season it is upsetting

If we await the January window before changing things around our League Position will suffer dramatically. What happened to teams dreading playing at B. Park? And how do we play against the likes of Wigan without boarding up the goalmouth or playing 11 goalkeepers? There's a big difference between moaning and observing the truth.

What happened in the second half?, that was abysmal to say the least....as we all know it is the midfield to blame or lack of it...if you have no midfield you have no attacking options, also if you have no midfield you have a very leaky defense...as even the best defense can not cover all eventualities. JS is still playing catch up with Corney's previous seasons follies, and awaits each week for funds, with Corney in charge this club will never go anywhere!.

OafcKent: you clearly didn't attend the game! This result was only 'unlucky' for Walsall who should have scored 4or5 in the second half. I wish the Latics website would freeview Shez's post match interview how he didn't swear is impressive. Clearly the players are either unfit or unwilling to perform, the lack of movement in marking or being available to receive the ball was soul destroying for the fans. Players clapping fans at the end of the game felt more of an insult than gratitude!

If Oldhamers want Premier League football, other than Manchester ... Huddersfield is the place.

Kenn Huddersfield have a chairman that invests in the team. We have captain clueless Corney with this fool in charge at best we can hope is to struggle every season.
