Latics rocked by new blow

Date published: 09 December 2009

ATHLETIC are reeling from another injury blow with the news that full-back Andy Holdsworth could be out for the remainder of the season.

Signed from Huddersfield Town in the summer, Holdsworth has already endured an injury-interrupted campaign due to tendonitis behind a knee cap.

He had treatment for the condition a month ago but is still suffering pain and discomfort and a specialist has now recommended surgery.

Holdsworth will go under the knife tomorrow and it is only after the surgeon has had a close look at the problem that Athletic will discover just how long he will be out of action.

At best, Holdsworth looks like being out for two months. At worst, he could be on the sidelines for six months.

Athletic have had a succession of long-term injury troubles to contend with, most notably midfield general Jon Worthington and key striker Pawel Abbott, in whose absence the team has slumped towards the relegation zone.

Defender Joe Jacobson has only just returned to first-team action after a lengthy lay-off, while manager Dave Penney’s first signing of the summer, Rob Purdie, has still not made a senior appearance.

To compound the problems, centre-back Reuben Hazell (calf) and midfield man Chris Taylor (hamstring) both missed the 2-0 defeat at Norwich City last weekend and are also ruled out of Saturday’s must-win home game with Exeter.

It will be the January transfer window before Athletic can strengthen the squad - and that could include Boundary Park returns for loan pair Greg Fleming (goalkeeper) and Chris O’Grady (striker). Fleming is at Dunfermline until January 1 and O’Grady’s loan at Rochdale expires on January 16.

FORMER Latics youngster Danny Philliskirk - son of the club’s youth supremo Tony - was an unused substitute for Chelsea in last night’s Champions League game with Apoel Nicosia.

FANS have the chance to air their views on Athletic’s proposed move to Failsworth tonight (7pm) at a consultation meeting at Radclyffe School.

No doubt this is Penney's fault too, how dare he sign players who get injured. Perhaps Corney will recommend a player to Penney like he did with Joe Jacobsen. You couldn't make it up.

The club is slowly dying and whoever the manager is that won't change until TTA go but we all know that wont happen until they've made their profit. Let's hope City dont sell Richards while theyre still here cos the manager will see precious little of it.

this football club is cursed. He isnt even a good player, lomax is probably better - but nevertheless another injury to go with this miserable season. lets just hope we scrape a 1-0 on saturday and theres a decent crowd to see it.its the best we can hope for. i wished i supported man city, thats just being honest! keep the fai...i cant even say it!

A decent crowd saturday Rg, I like your humour i would be suprised if there is 4000 saturday. I for one will not be going, saying that i have not gone now for the past 7 games.
And hey my lack of interest is on a par with the directors now, "DON'T REALLY CARE LESS".

These three amigos really have progressed the latics,we are now in a worse position we have ever been.Plus lets rename boundary park something like boundary dump.

Just go and watch city then! End of conversation

Oldham Scotland, if you "Couldn't really care less" as you put it, then why do you continue to spout nonsense below each article. You are the fans Latics don't need, continuous pure negativity. If you paid your way at BP you would probably have the right to an opinion. Hush now.

Woe is us! Don't agree we're in our worst ever situation, that was post Chris Moor, but it is desperate and my worry is now the club is blinkered down the wrong direction. The apathy is understandable, its £20, we are rubbish, the team is full of poor players brought in by Penney, apathy about going to BP is rife and to cap it all, its winter and my SAD is kicking in! We are not alone though, all league clubs are reaping the misery of the Premier League clubs abhorrent greed!

15th July 2009. Mr Blitz said: “Considering the budget he has been given, the manager (Dave Penney) has put together a very good team. I would not be surprised to see us in the top eight.”
The average director's knowledge of football.

AB is right we was in a worse position after Moore left. So OS and the others who want TTA out, we would again go into admin as no one will be able to pay the bills again. But has you guys say we are in the WORST state ever so if they left we wouldn't exist?!?!?!?!?!?!?

yes thats what i'll do 'lazyboy' - i'll just stop caring about the latics and go and watch city, its that easy. If it was do you think I would be on here caring about andy holdsworths predicaments? no its not. If this club was in the northern conference i would still be there, moaning! say something constructive next time instead of just 'go and watch city then'.Ryan Brooke hat trick saturday.

Hornblower - you should write your posts in English.
