Price is right for Athletic

JASON PRICE has been backed by boss Dave Penney to provide some missing nous to the Athletic front line.

The 32-year-old has arrived on a month’s loan from Coca-Cola League One rivals Millwall in a bid to provide fresh impetus to an Athletic side badly lacking goals this season.

Penney knows what to expect of the distinctive Welsh forward, having coached him previously at Doncaster, and he is set to throw him straight into the action for tonight’s huge away match at Stockport (7.45pm kick-off).

“I know Jason very well and I brought him from Hull to Doncaster where he did great for me,” said Penney of a player who has made seven starts this season since signing on a free transfer from the Dons.

“He is a bit of a cult figure with his afro and he certainly knows the game.

“We need that experience up front that we have been missing. Pav (Abbott) is coming back from his injury, we have Keigan (Parker) and Chris O’Grady has gone to Rochdale which we had to do as he was running out of contract.

“So this enables us to get more experience, more know-how and hopefully, more goals.”

Other deadline day business at the club saw Crystal Palace goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan return to Boundary Park on a loan deal until the end of the season, while Huddersfield right-back or central midfielder Jim Goodwin’s spell at the club has been extended until the end of the campaign.

“He has been great for us,” said Penney of Goodwin. “We like the character that he brings and the mental toughness, which we haven’t got enough of in this club.”

One blow the club received yesterday was the news that Rob Purdie requires an operation on his troublesome hip injury and will not play this season. The former Darlington utility man signed in the summer but hasn’t made a single first-team appearance.

Andy Holdsworth is another ruled likely by Penney to miss the rest of the campaign as he recovers from knee surgery.

As for tonight’s game, Chris Taylor may not play after picking up a bang on the hip in training. The winger has had a scan but the injury is not thought to be serious.

Stockport have suffered a blow on the eve of tonight’s game by losing captain Michael Raynes to Scunthorpe for an undisclosed fee.

The transfer of the 22-year-old centre-back was completed moments before the deadline.

County, 12 points adrift of safety at the foot of League One, have snapped up a replacement in Paul Huntington after his contract was terminated at Leeds by mutual consent.

Athletic (from): Brill, Goodwin, Hazell, Gregan, Jacobson, Smalley, Furman, Stephens, Taylor, Abbott, Parker, Black, Whitaker, Lee, Marrow, Brooke, Eaves, Colbeck, Price, Flahavan.

PETERBOROUGH have appointed former Stockport and Motherwell manager Jim Gannon as their new boss, following yesterday’s sacking of Mark Cooper.

Look at County, in administration limbo, struggling at the foot of the table, yet still manage to bring players in, quickly and efficiently and from right under our noses.

Amazing what a difference a professional set up can make.

Shame on you Latics for not making the most of the transfer window and the funds from the sale of O'Grady.

Flahavan won't be in the squad...we couldn't even get him signed on time to be eligible to play!

Jason Price - 17 GOALS in THREE SEASONS at Doncaster and he was only 28 then - I'm sure Mr Penney's latest addition to the ex-Huddersfiled and Doncaster retired players association who now operate out of Boundary Park, Oldham will make a HUGE DIFFERENCE to the side.

New York, New York....My Way is nearer the mark, with the first line " And now the end is near" very apt !

We must stop all the critisism NOW!
None of us want us to go down and we need to get behind them starting tonight.
O'GRADY SHOULD COME BACK?????
I hope you o'grady lovers watched him miss an empty net from 2 yards out last night! He was poor.

lazyboy - open your eyes, man. What's the new marketing man doing? What exactly is it that Alan Hardy does, apart from coming out without ridiculous comments every six months? Why do we have a chairman who lives in New York? Why is the club run by people who have no idea how to run a football club? Why are they always blaming the fans? They're killing this club.

If pennys not axed within the next couple of weeks then the club is doomed. Relagation, owners pull out, administration, deducted points in League 2....I dread to think whats next. Make it £10, get some bums on seats and somehow get behind the team (i know its not easy) which will help pull us out of this mess. If we go down and bury and rochdale come up...well it doesnt even bare thinking about

After the draw against Tranmere I said I wont be going to BP untill Penney has gone. He's a League 2 manager who has put together a League 2 team. Shez might have had had is issues but at least we played the ball on the ground and, more importantly, there was a bit of passion shown. Lets hope that, as people have said before, Price turns out ok, failing that we need the Penney to drop before Latics do...

Lazyboy are you deluded, O'grady might have missed a sitter last night but in all competitions he has scored nearly as many as ATHLETICS full squad, so when he stops scoring then have a go.

Looks like it might get called off. The stay of execution continues..

....or another chance for the jokers on this forum who think that its all about fans not backing the team to delude themselves further - "3 games in hand....we will nearly be in the play off's when we win those". You can almost hear Penney's "lack of match fitness" excuses when we dint win at Tranmere and "fixture congestion with small squad" as we dont even make a fight of it before going down.

No disrespect to Jason Price - 70 goals in 360 games - , but if this is the best we can do it's a sorry state of affairs.

The longer this season goes on the the harder it is to keep the faith, Dave Penney has ripped the heart and soul out of this club and we shoulds all attend the next game and express our feeling (protest) by show him and his backroom staff the RED CARD.

can 2 different owners and 6-7-8 managers be all wrong? Or is there a deeper rooted problem at O.A.F.C
OUR FANS ARE THE WORST IN THE LAND.
players have mentioned this before, Bunch of moaners with the heads stuck in the 90's.
Poor and deluded I believe Ronnie Moore said to me in the Isle of man.
Let it go bust then, Who cares anymore.

In defence of lazyboy: Last season Chris O'Grady scored 2 goals in 39 games for Latics, Bury, Bradford and Stockport. Neither Bury or Bradford took the opportunity of extending his loan spell. He's scoring for one season only along side a good striker in Chris Dagnall, who'll be bought by a bigger club in the summer. The fact that we have made a profit on O'Grady is good business.

here we go again ammypam blaming the owners when will you realise its not the 3 amigos. are we going into administration NO.
its not the owners they have invested what they can.
its penneys signings.I tell you you what its the owners that are keeping this club afloat i dont think for 1 minute they are in credit. get a reality check ammypam there isnt a cue of potential investers

Report this comment (20889)

I don't think people want the team or OAFC to fail. What they want is a management set up that matches the fans aspirations. The three amigos are making a very good job at being land and property speculators and a very bad job at being football club owners. That is the crux of the issue.

The last two points old-mancunian makes are valid. However I think they have got the words ‘good’ and ‘bad’ in the wrong sentences. I accept the 3As may not be every ones cup of tea for running and keeping our football club afloat, a club that the supporters have no financial responsibility for whatsoever. But they are unequivocally at the top of a long list of one! This is really difficult to get through to most people. Not one detractor of them has ever come up withac a lucid alternative!

Report this comment (20977)

I see what you are saying MikeyMike. Perhaps its just that the club is bad at PR. There is a lot of talk about land, stadia, development etc. (but they're not very good at it as you say). Then they are serving up a rubbish team (but are at least giving us a team instead of extinction).

Alternatives are few and far between. Without the land at BP to attract the development sharks, the club could have gone under years ago. Maybe the land IS the problem because we only seem to attract sharks.
