Taylor doubt for Tranmere test

CHRIS TAYLOR remains a doubt for Athletic’s big relegation battle away at Tranmere Rovers tomorrow.

The winger, who has experienced a frustrating season in and out of the side through a combination of illness and injury, has yet to fully recover from a sore hip sustained in training last week when he collided with Dale Stephens and is rated by boss Dave Penney as only a 50-50 chance to play at Prenton Park.

On the positive side, Pawel Abbott is fit and ready to form a new strike partnership with on-loan Millwall man Jason Price — a player Penney believes will help solve his team’s continuing goalscoring woes.

“Jason is effective in the penalty box,” said Penney, who played alongside the 32-year-old when the forward was coming up through the ranks at Swansea City.

“He likes to stay there, where things hit him and go in, so we are hoping his presence up there will take a little bit of weight off Pawel’s shoulders.

“It adds to our attacking options. We felt we needed a bigger player — we have Keigan (Parker) who has got pace, we have Pawel who is a good size though not a typical big centre-forward and Pricey will give us a little bit of presence up there as well.”

Also in the squad for the trip to the Wirral are ‘keeper Darryl Flahavan and centre-back Hasney Aljofree.

Flahavan is back for a second spell on loan from Crystal Palace and will sport a protective facial mask after sustaining a fractured cheekbone if selected in place of Dean Brill.

And Aljofree is likely to be on the bench after signing a short-term pay-as-you-play deal until the end of the season following his release by Swindon.

“He is local so we have put him on a short-term contract as cover for Reuben (Hazell) and Sean (Gregan) in case we have a problem,” said Penney of the Aljofree signing.

As for the game itself, under-pressure Penney accepts that it is crucial Athletic come back home with three points which could propel the team out of the Coca-Cola League One relegation zone.

“It is probably as big as we have had so far,” he added. “We are getting four or five matches behind on teams now and so we need to play the game and we need to make sure we get some points.”

Athletic (from): Brill, Goodwin, Hazell, Gregan, Jacobson, Smalley, Furman, Stephens, Taylor, Abbott, Parker, Marrow, Black, Whitaker, Lee, Brooke, Eaves, Colbeck, Flahavan, Price, Aljofree.

So now he's signing players because they are local. Brilliant.

Reading the article on Latics website about the proposed new stadium, no matter what the fans opinons are the stadium will be built in Failsworth given the green light by the council, also the pictures of the new ground with the corners filled in does look pretty good but take the corners out which they are thinking of doing the ground looks absolutely DIABOLICAL, do us a favour Latics if your gonna build it, build it right

Here we go again, Mr Penney puts foot in mouth time !...
I find it amazing that Mr Penney like Ronnie Moore appeared to be as one when it comes to making daft and often stupid statements, leaving themselves wide open for criticism.
Since when have we the funds to sign players because they're local ?...Andy Ritchie lives within a few miles and I'm damn sure he would still show our "strikers" and most certainly JP how to actually score goals.

Since when did we need players to deflect the ball ?

"...likes to stay there, where things hit him and go in"

The same could be said of the ballon in the Sunderland Liverpool match, perhaps we should have tried to sign that on as well !!!!

Yes, we required cover at centreback position but crucially we desperately need a speedy, direct box player and Jason Price is anything but that. Dave Penney is living in the past and his solution to the grim position we are in seems strange to say the least. Penney has had ample time to bring in a better player than Price, I hope we do not 'pay the price'!!!!!!

aljofree has been signed as cover for the short term, give the lad a chance to prove his worth, same as price its no good knocking them til they've been given a chance, lets hope that we play good attacking football on saturday and who cares if the ball goes into the tranmere net off prices backside as long as its 3 points at the end of the game

A few dodgy comments there, but good luck to the new signings lets hope they re-ignite our season especially against Tranmere, COME ON YOU BLUES!!

I for one am going on saturday and SUPPORTING the team and really hope Price scores to shut you all up!
COME ON OLDHAM!

And Aljofree is a local lad and I think I'm right in saying he is an Oldham fan, Sure that was mentioned last time.
So not just another mercinary, hopefully a player who wants to play for us and shows passion.
Damned if you do, Damned if you dont at the moment eh penney?

Chaddyender, The club stated last July that they were moving the club which would back up your statement. I see Hardy is trying to wind it up by saying that it will only happen if they get the War memorial land for next to nothing. He's hoping the fans will turn on people wishing to protect the memorial park. Here comes another infight thanks to OAFC. Cheers Alan Danny Simon and Simon.

Taylor hasn't been fit for weeks and what he hasplayed has been poor. I'm one fo the mad ones and going to Tranmere. I'm going supporting the team BUT I STILL WANT PENNEY OUT.Not an easy place to go so we will either be 5th bottom at 5 o'clock or 3rd bottom. Now is the time for the team to play Wud be great if pRICE scores and Pav mite benefit with Price around. Who knows but PENNEY.C'MON OLDHAM

It beggars belief that a young kid like Taylor is never fit!God help him if he had been in the latics teams of a few years ago, Jimmy Frizz would have kicked him out long before now, and before you start having a go about the fact he is being singled out, at least it would appear that Purdie, Worthington and Holdsworth actually have been unlucky! Who the hell is paying the Physios and Groundsmen at Latics, because between em they aint worth a PENNEY!!

Report this comment (21212)

Taylor appears to be a huge injury risk. No wonder no one bought him/took him on loan during the 'transfer window'. Nothing seems to be fully operational at BP. Dark days!
