Goodwin sets sights on an away-day shock

JIM GOODWIN believes Athletic can cause an upset at Swindon tomorrow night.
Following a hard-fought and vital 1-0 away-day win at Tranmere, the on-loan Huddersfield Town player says the pressure is off for the long trek to face the play-off contenders.
Athletic, now out of the Coca-Cola League One relegation zone, have picked up more points — 15, including four wins — away from home than at Boundary Park and Goodwin hopes that the positive trend continues tomorrow.
“Swindon are flying high and going terrifically well, but the onus is on them as they are expected to do well,” said the right-back, who put in a typically uncompromising shift at Prenton Park for boss Dave Penney.
“There is no pressure on us whatsoever as everyone expects us to get turned over.
“But if we can put in a performance down there similar to what we showed at Tranmere in the first half, maintaining that for 90 minutes, I have no doubt we will come away with something.
“You never know. Bottom teams beat top teams in this division all the time and hopefully we can pull off a shock.”
A last-minute Charlton equaliser from Nicky Bailey denied Swindon a 1-0 victory at the County Ground on Saturday as the Robins slipped a place to sixth in the table.
Athletic are now up to 19th by virtue of the three points at Tranmere and, with games in hand on all their near-rivals, they are starting to glance up, rather than down, the table.
“It was one of those games that really was a six-pointer for us,” added Goodwin of the Rovers win.
“We couldn’t afford to let Tranmere get any more points on us and I thought we stuck in there and pulled off a great result.
“We worked hard on set pieces all through the week. The gaffer brought in some extra height to the team and it was a great corner from Dale (Stephens) and an excellent finish from Pawel (Abbott).”
o THE postponed home game against Brentford will now be played on Tuesday, March 30 (7.45pm kick-off).
Have Your Say
Shez is in no way to blame for the predicament we are in, we were banging them in last season and at least we had some fight (even if it was against each other)
If we are talking about being treated in an unproffesional manner then that has to be Allott and Crossley hope they continue to do well at Chesterfield, because they were treated like rubbish at BP.
Penney has given him his chance!
staedy on jim if the team plays like it did at tranmere we will get well and truly beat.
tranmere were poor latics slightly better.
remember swindon are a top 6 side playing at home with payntor having his best season and charlie austin on fire.
lets just keep a clean sheet eh and try and nick it.
though i suspect we will loose marginaly 1.0
Latics Observer - have you watched Oldham in the last 3 months?, cos if you have you should have noticed that Dale Stephens has actually been in the team!!
If you're going to have a go at the manager at least try to base your criticism on something he's actually done, or not, otherwise you run the risk of looking a tad silly. :)

lt appears that Penney is now seen as doing a good job! Is this because of one win against Tranmere. I hope we carry on winning, but with the fixtures coming up it will not be easy and that will show if Penney's team are any good.
penney out penney out you fools
Goodwin was wrong as wedidn't do an away day shock.Played well for 44 minutes then self destruct. Scored 2 goals but they where just consolation goals.Must win game AGAIN now against WALSALL. Not too down though as Leeds didn't make it to Wembley so they can stop singing that song now. LOL Serious note thoguh WHAT NEXT FOR LATICS???????
Away day shock???? So, that's saying no one expects Latics to win. What a depth the team has sunk to. The player's (Goodwin)belief was obviously misplaced. Not seen any reports over here but I assume that having been 4 - 0 down at one stage there was very little to cheer about. The second goal for Latics was well into added time. Looks like the playing record suffered a 'blip' by winning on Saturday. False hopes?
Will Mr Goodwin (ahhh the irony of his surname) now be re-setting his sights on a home-day shock v. Walsall? Swindon fans are lucky, it must be great to watch a 'Paynter' at work as opposed to just watching paint dry week after week.

Fantastic a result at last - amazing how Dale Stephens has been player of the month twice and again is starting to show his talent for February....Where has he been Mr Penney ?
And to be fair to Mr P...where was he when you had him Shez ?
Yet another player of quality who for whatever starnge reasons, has been treated in the most unprofessional manner by his employers and their staff, given a fair chance like many others including of course Chris O'Grady who was given away to Rochdale KTF..
