Penney to step up loan search

ATHLETIC boss Dave Penney was left a disappointed man after Swindon hit his side for four at the County Ground.
A crazy three-goal spell either side of half-time did for the visitors’ chances and with results of rivals elsewhere going against Athletic – Tranmere won 1-0 at Gillingham and Brighton claimed a point in a goalless draw at home to Huddersfield – the home game against Walsall this weekend assumes huge importance for Athletic.
Despite being the better side for most of the first half Athletic, now only outside the Coca-Cola League One drop zone on goal difference, couldn’t convert the chances that came their way and fell to a crushing 4-2 defeat.
“We had a mad couple of minutes before half-time and another mad couple of minutes afterwards,” Penney said.
“For the first 44 minutes we were the better side and created a lot of chances.
“We didn’t hit the target and sometimes we have got to be a little less selfish and play somebody else in when they are in a better position.
“It could have been different going in as we had played quite well and frustrated them first-half. But you can’t give goals away like we did and expect to get points.
“After the first goal we should settle down, regain our composure and make sure we don’t concede again so quickly.
“Second half, we wanted to get back into the game and started quite well again. We reckon the third goal was offside and even their lads were saying it. But you have to go on what the linesman gives.”
Penney hinted he may try again in the loan market to bring another striker in after target Paul Heffernan joined Bristol Rovers, but another priority ahead of the Walsall test at Boundary Park is to tighten the side up defensively on the training ground.
“We felt we were on the right track,” added Penney. “We had kept three clean sheets in our previous three games, other than the stupid penalty that was given against us (at home to Millwall).
“Then we concede four. It isn’t like us and we have to get back to being tight and resolute.
“I’m not happy with the result and am disappointed with certain aspects of the game. But we will put it right.”
ATHLETIC’S reserves travel to take on Bury today in the Manchester Senior Cup (2pm) at Radcliffe Borough, a game striker Lewis Alessandra is expected to play some part in as he returns from a long-term ankle injury.

Desperately poor in attack where experienced players had decent chances but were not technically proficient to convert such. Jacobson should be made to watch his shocking error in giving away a penalty when there was no real danger, again and again. A midfield that doe'nt know how to tackle and assist their defence and that is why we were beaten so comphrehensively. Add some poor officiating to the problem and Athletic are in the mire again. WE STILL NEED A GOALSCORER MR CORNEY!!!!!
Mr Penney, the biggest failing your team has is you and your coaching methods, quite clearly this fantastic defence of which you are supposedly proud of, having had 6 months to sort it - once again fell apart when the pressure is on.
Yet again you come up with stupid comments, can't have enough midfielders ??... correct in some ways, but totally pointless even if you have the best in football if you don't have any strikers, when is the penny going to drop ?
Penney out end off
Even before last nights results, Latics were only out of the bottom 4 on goal difference, i see we have got Simon Whalley on trial having been made a free agent from Norwich and guess what he's another midfielder, how about bringing Fabien Brandy in Mr Hardy
Who cares about the defence, so long as we score one more goal than the opposition? AND TO DO THAT WE NEED STRIKERS!!!! We have scored the least goals in the whole division - look at the other end of the pitch Dave Penney, thats where your problems are.

we dont get good players in because no one turns up to home games anymore. we have become a league 2 club before we have got there.
Penny says ''We reckon the third goal was offside''
Yet again the same old excuses - I don't suppose he has ever disagreed with any decisions that have gone in Latics' favour - and he is still going on about the Millwall penalty.
Why does he never admit that his side is just not good enough ?
He also says ''For the first 44 minutes we were the better side.'' He doesn't say ''For 46 minutes we were the worst side.''
Hopefully we will be a Penny-less club before we become a penniless club !
So DP is not happy with the result and is disappointed with certain aspects of the game! How does he think we feel?
Another foray into the, mainly, "over the hill market" which will do nothing to improve the fortunes of OAFC.
Is there a loan market for Football managers??
Have Your Say

"I'm not happy with the result and am disappointed with certain aspects of the game". (D. Penney)
Judging by remarks read on message boards (and the on-line pages on this site) it is the (majority) of fans who are not happy with you and your average players.
Not being able to attend matches (after all it's a bit too far to travel) I can only go off remarks made and reports read. None make for good reading.
It seems that managers need more than excuses.
