Latics ponder Price’s future
Reporter: MATTHEW CHAMBERS

ATHLETIC will make a decision today on the future of loan striker Jason Price.
The Millwall man’s loan spell is now up after a return of one goal in seven appearances for the club, culminating in his withdrawal from the action after just over an hour in the draw at Exeter City.
Though the 32-year-old’s goal tally isn’t impressive, his work-rate is and Penney may seek to extend the deal either for a further month or until the end of the season.
Millwall manager Kenny Jackett has already stated that he has no problem with Price staying on at Boundary Park.
But with five loan spots now taken up at Athletic — the maximum number allowed in any matchday squad — Penney could opt to release Price and focus his energies on bringing in a new face in what is a do-or-die month for the club as far as their Coca-Cola League One survival hopes are concerned.
The window for loans closes for the season on March 25, but as long as a player is already registered with a club a loan deal can be extended after that date.
A run of five home matches in six games starts tomorrow with the visit of Leyton Orient (7.45pm kick-off).
Athletic officials are “hopeful” that the game will go ahead as planned, though overnight frost has penetrated covers placed over the pitch and there are particular concerns over the sections that are in shadow.
Frost covers will be removed today in an attempt to thaw out the playing surface before being put back on tonight.
Keigan Parker (groin strain) and Alex Marrow (illness) were unavailable for the Exeter trip but both could be back in contention for tomorrow, along with Jim Goodwin (thigh).
Goalkeeping hero Dean Brill, who saved a last-minute penalty to preserve a point for Athletic at Exeter, deflected the attention away from himself and towards the rest of the side — with a rare goal from captain Sean Gregan becoming a big talking point after the game.
“Goalkeepers get the acclaim for moments like that which don’t happen so often,” Brill said.
“But the real heroes were the 11, 12 or 13 players who stuck together to get us a point.
“Gregs was in the changing room afterwards trying to settle his boots down — he said they were on fire!
“The way Gregs strikes the ball, if you want it to fall to anyone in the penalty area it is him.”

I think the question with Price is ‘has he made a difference that we can see in points, goals and results? The answer is a big fat no! Would we have fared any worse with Ryan Brooke gaining some valuable experience? No! What are these below average loan players saving us from, or getting for us? It’s not relegation and its not goals. Am I missing something here?
I think Latics should be pondering Dave Penny's future, never mind any of the players.
If you need a lift back to Millwall Price let me know!
Having seen Jason Price play in a few games i would extend his deal to the end of the season, he gives 100% every game unlike Abbott who seems to be out of breath every time he makes a run into the box, and if anyone should be going it should be DP himself 1 - 1 against Exeter was a very poor result and very lucky in the end to get a point from the game.
I think Latics should be pondering Dave Penny's future, never mind any of the players.
Bring your boots next time Price. Ones you can shoot in.
well done to dean brill, has had a lot of stick all season but the point he rescued here could be a deciding factor come the end of the season. PENNEY OUT.
we need him to stay he was trainning today i belive at oldham.
chaddyender your not being serious are you about abbott.
please were all down about this season but pav is our only goal threat.
looks like the chron is trying to give brill a bit of confidence, 1 good penalty save doesnt make up for the blunders though in his defence it was a good thing rather than bad
One attempt on goal (one on target, none off!) speaks volumes. The fact Penney keeps trying to convince us that we are doing OK whilst we slip deeper into the mire should be concerning not just the fans but the board as well; despite all they have done in the past their continued lack of action is a disgrace and an afront to the fans. We have scored less goals than anyone in the football league, with the exception of Darlington. Anyone like to remind me who their manager was last season??
When it was first mooted that Jason Price was a target for Penney I questioned whether he was the type of forward we required. He has never been and never will be a potent force in front of goal and in the few games that he's played the evidence is there for all to see. His solitary goal at Swindon was a gift from their keeper and had no bearing on the game at all. Hartlepool(who operate on lower gates than us)obtain a Premiership striker on loan & he nets 3 goals on debut. Penney wake up!!!!
Latics should be pondering the future of almost all the team and management not just Price at least he has a go.....another poor performance... RUBBISH RUBBISH RUBBISH - tired of OAFC.. How long before a positive change = DP out?
To all Latics fans please go onto Latics website and read the latest story with the headline SIX OF THE BEST, this story goes to prove what an absolute JOKE and Disgrace Dave Penney actually is, his comments are an absolute insult to the real fans of Latics, time Penney went and our feelings should be heard tomorrow night against Leyton Orient.
Oh, and I see Heffernan scored again for Bristol Rovers...amazing how many strikers who cant score under Penney go on to look like good players at other clubs. Still, he will probably claim that his training methods improved them and that he should get all the credit...
Come on Simon / Alan - the should have dropped by now.. this clown (DP) has to go..
PENNEY OUT
good point oasis26 about him being darlos manager that place is doomed also.
the dave penney affect brings a club to its knees with negative football.
i see on latics sight he wants the fans to get behind the team we can be the 12th man.
shame the mans never witnessed a great atmosphere at BP thats due to him.
first manager ever to keep 30% of loyal supporters away from the ground.
glad im not going to see him cup his ears tom night.
the mans a disgrace and says we need to get behind the team
First let me get one thing straight i have watched the lads for 21 seasons. I am in my 22nd season and as popeye would say "thats all i can stands, i cant stands no more" My season ticket has gone. Next seaso i will be not renewing my ticket instead just picking the best matches,Which if still under penny may not be that many. My heart is for oldham athletic but tonight it sinks heavy. Also please for the sake of the club Keep oafc in oldham .
We have had a long season of excuses from Dave Penney. He see's things the rest of us fail to, and then mocks the people who pay to watch his non-magic show. I'm nervous for the situation we are in, a position we should not be in if the last 4 seasons have anything to go by. PENNEY PACK UP AND SHIP OUT AND TAKE THE NO IDEA NO EFFERT SIGNINGS WITH YOU!!!! WE NEED A SAVIOUR.
I agree totally with chaddyender. Penney asks for the supporters to get behind the team, but he totally ignores the fans. I remember a recent home game where he made an idiotic substitution and when the fans showed their disapproval Penney just smirked to Gray and shook his head. I remember John Sheridan would always come over to the fans at away matches and applaud us, even if we lost. Does Penney do that? No other club would still keep such a useless manager after 32 games of total dross!
I was at rochdale last week aginst rotheram. They have a forward better than anything latics have and he looked a goal threat, scored one and had a hand in the other goals. Chris o grady wonder if penny had him watched when he was on loan. TIME TO GO, WHEN WILL THE BOARD SACK HIM.
.....And if Penney goes, who takes his place?
Chaddyender, I have just read the article on the OAFC website, what an absolute joke this man is! Last Thursday this was a must win match, now he is pleased with a point, and talking about the luck in front of goal as if we have scored a hatful. To top it off he finishes it off with a veiled pop at the fans, as if its our fault that the team is playing rubbish.
Forwards who score goals are the most sought-after players in the game. Not many can do it well, that's why they cost millions. Reject journeymen on loan will not produce miracles. Waste of time. Give some experience to our own players.
Those of us who have a real idea of whats going on, realise that the reason why we're not scoring goals is because of the service our front two get. Don't slate Price, he's done alright, it's not his fault he's only got Pawel Abbott for company up there whilst the rest of the midfield protect the defence
I have to say that the comments of the supporters on this message board speak volumes. The whole set up at BP is wrong. TTA haven't a clue what to do next and as for DP and his crew..enough said!
Mark Hotte, I made that comment about midfield covering defence, and not being able to support the front two quickly, over six months ago and was slated. Anyone with a footballing knowledge would know this, but on here we are all experts and all know better. and to further the point you need a couple of strikers that can hold the ball up well and quick, unfortunately for us we have neither. best way to solve the problem would be a 5-3-2 a extra defender so midfield can support the front.
MarkHotte - are you saying that 8 on-loan strikers in the last two seasons have never had any service in 59 appearances?
Anyway, you're all distracted by Penney, he's just a symptom and not the disease. Like saying, "How do I get rid of these spots?" when you really have bubonic plague. If the board won't pay for a decent manager or a decent player, what hope is there?
it does not matter what system you play.either penny has told the midfield to stay put or the midfielders can not be bothered.it is obvious league 1 full backs and midfielders do not have the talent of their premier league collegues but one thing that they can copy is thier willingness to support the attack then get back when it breaks down. fact is either they cant be bothered or they are brain dead
ammypam scotland same old blame the board comments.
BORING
Funkster where in my quote on here did i mention the directors?, only thing i mentioned is the teams tatics?????...engage brain before operating the foaming drivel!.
A positive result - at last. A long way to go to safety though and it may just be a blip (winning that is!) but, whatever the situation at the end of the campaign, Penney must not be in charge next season.
scotland you mention the directors all the time apart this article.
you want us to go down the same road as southend dont you spending more than we have.
brain engaged as per usual.. lets see how many articles you comment on without blaming the TTA
Have Your Say

Maybe DP has decided that 'The Price isn't Right?'.
