Penney back in striker market

ATHLETIC will attempt to enter the loan market for a striker after Daniel Nardiello picked up a hamstring strain in the impressive victory over Leyton Orient.

The on-loan Blackpool forward suffered the injury shortly before the hour in the 2–0 win at Boundary Park and is set to miss the next three Coca-Cola League One matches.

Manager Dave Penney – who tried to bring in an extra attacking player to compensate for the return to Millwall of loan man Jason Price yesterday – will carry on with his efforts to boost Athletic’s attacking options via a loan swoop.

“Daniel looks as though he has got a hamstring injury,” said Penney, after a win which takes Athletic above Tranmere and into 19th place in the division.

“We are not quite sure how long he will be out and we will assess it in the next couple of days once it has settled down and see where we go after that.

“His first game was a tough trip down at Exeter and he came off with cramp down there in his groin.

“It settled down quickly but this doesn’t look like it will be as short-term and he will certainly be missing for a week to 10 days I would have thought, minimum.

“We tried before the game to get a striker in and will continue to do that for the rest of the week.”

As for the Orient win, Penney believes that the timing of both goals played a big role in the overall performance.

“The players were excellent and everybody stepped up to the plate,” he said,

“Performances have been decent against Millwall and Norwich without us getting the results and I don’t think we probably played as well against Orient.

“But we got an early goal which gave us confidence to push on from there. They stepped up a level after that.

“It was great to get the second one so early in the second half as it was important we didn’t sit back and become edgy because we hadn’t won for a couple of games.”

Penney also said that Dean Furman (knee), Jim Goodwin (thigh strain), Keigan Parker (groin) and Ryan Brooke (hamstring) all have chances of returning for the big game at home to Wycombe this Saturday.

A couple is two David. We had not won for four.

Typical of the Latics striker curse.

Shame about Nardiello, I thought he put in a decent performance last night. His injury and substitution unsettled the Latics who then lost some of the head of steam they had built up.

Hopefully a speedy recovery.

fabian brandy will be here before sat i found out at match last night before this injury 90% done so expect this by tomorrow

was at the game last night & thought we played well passed it a lot kept it on ground and used chris & deans pace so good result, but let's not get to carried away as we did beat another struggling team if we win on sat then can start to cheer up a bit, but we got a long way to go yet so lets not forget that & dont expect to much of the team too soon just enjoy this result while it lasts.

orient were bad made latics look good. cant remember the last game i got out of my seat twice.
well done the 3 amigos for funding more money on another loan player.
see thats better aint it scotland and ammypam i bet you dont have your own buisness though if you did you cant be far off going out of buisness.
spend in proportion

fabian brandy is not the answer end off.

ianmms - I thought Brandy was on loan at Gillingham

Good win last night, but Orient were woeful. It was good that we had 7 pre penney players in the starting line up! We may be okay this year and stay up, but that is all. I hope Furman and Worthington do not end up as first choices, Whiataker and Stephens did well. The problem is, Penney and Gray will be kept on next year and the best their players and tactics can lead to willo be mid table next year, not a top ten or play off place. Is that the ambition that the club have!

funkster - "well done to TTA for funding another loan player"! Yeah, our loan players are REALLY successful, aren't they? 5 goals in 60 appearances from the strikers. Well done to TTT for hiring and keeping Penney! Well done to TTT for the Broadway stand! Well done to TTT for not actually buying anybody properly! Well done to TTT for record low crowds! Well done to TTT for our lowest league position for nearly 40 years! You've been well done, mate.

Latics need a permanent team, not "on loan" strikers all the time, how can the team gel if players are constantly coming and going (and yes I am aware the transfer window isn't open but this has been happening for a while now).
On another note, I can't believe Latics actually won. I think that makes it five wins in five months, good going team. Nice to see we're getting our money’s worth. It's good to see a clean sheet to.

@ ammypam - Lowest league position in 40 years??? Do you not remember Ritchie's first season in charge? We barely left the bottom four all season, only a last day miracle of us beating reading and city thrashing york kept us up.

You have a point with the rest though.
