It’s all going Brill

PARK LIFE:
Dean firmly set as Latics number one
GOALKEEPER Dean Brill is a rehabilitated man, according to his manager Dave Penney.
The former Luton stopper cut a nervous figure earlier this season and conceded a number of untidy goals.
That prompted Penney to bring in an alternative number one, with Darryl Flahavan arriving on loan from Crystal Palace in November, initially for a one-month loan which was extended to two.
In that time, the 24-year-old Brill was demoted to the reserves in a bid to build his confidence back up while out of the limelight.
But after Flahavan was forced to cut short his initial loan spell at Boundary Park due to injury, Brill reclaimed the starting spot and hasn't looked back since — and Flahavan's return to the club seems to have focused his efforts even more.
"Dean did okay then let in a couple of soft goals and came out of the team," said Penney, who saw his number one earn a point for his team at Exeter thanks to a last-minute penalty save at St James' Park.
"He worked hard in the reserves and in training and has come back in after Darryl (Flahavan) fractured his cheekbone.
"He deserves to be in there and looks an accomplished goalkeeper now.
"That is what we thought we had bought and now he is back at it."
Brill's clean sheet against Leyton Orient on Tuesday night was his 11th of the season.

Why is Dave Penney blowing Dean Brill's trumpet, how many points has he cost us this season with absolute howlers, we'd be well up the table now if we had Greg Flemming in the net, but Dave Penney knows better bringing in a goalkeeper from the conference, hope to see greg between the sticks next season ( thats if he wants to play for that joker called Penney )
well dave lets just hope he keeps his good from up then
I don't know exactly what the clean sheets record for a season is, but 11 is not bad going and had the defence been a bit more stable in the early season, we would be a few more points to the good.
beg to differ re Brill. he is very average. he let one through his hands on Tuesday that went for a corner. if he is the number one, shows what level of team we have!!
What makes me laugh with the goal keeping situation is that we let Fleming go because as DP and Gray said, 'he didn't have enough experience.' They obviously thought Brill did until he started making mistakes then all of a sudden he was "still only young and learning his trade" We then had to get another keeper in on loan, wasting a spot that we didn't need to in the first place. I think I could give DP the benefit of the doubt if he stopped treating the fans like idiots.
brill in reserves to keep him out of the limelight eh. yes must be hard dropping regular clangers in front of mighty crowds of 4000.
oh and not interested in what penney has to say about anything
"oh and not interested in what penney has to say about anything"
Interested enough to keep posting on here though eh ;-)
Yes,he's certainly a liability at times. Perhaps more a liabilty than an asset over the season to date?
Good keepers need to be able to track out to the penalty spot and pluck the cross out of the air. Banksy was a master of this and rarely punched. How many goalies do this today. Shot stopping is easy. Good goalkeeping coaches are a rare breed. Confidence is only achieved by being the boss of your own penalty area and I wish that young Deano could be a colossus and take charge of his area to give old Gregs an easier time. Mindyou, how many modern keepers do you see gathering long crosses now?
I see Brill 'let a weak shot suirm through his grasp' for Wycombe's second goal. Well at least his consistent inconsistency hasn't deserted him.
Last minute penalty saves Latics against fellow strugglers - says it all from the reports I have seen over here. Penney - usul excuses.
another BRILLiant performance.
Oops! Sorry for the typo errors on my last posting.
Have read more reports over the weekend and none make for good reading and the critics (not those who post on here)all seem to agree that the team is very poor.
Have Your Say

Nothing against Brill (except, with a name like that, the Trading Standards must have had him checked out for some 'performances') but would DP know a good player if he saw one?
