Goodwin suffers injury setback

Reporter: MATTHEW CHAMBERS
Date online: 12 March 2010

JIM GOODWIN will miss out once again as Athletic chase consecutive Coca-Cola League One victories.

The on-loan Huddersfield man is still suffering the effects of a thigh strain which has seen him absent for the last five matches.

He had hoped to make a return in the crunch relegation clash with Wycombe Wanderers at Boundary Park tomorrow, but Goodwin broke down after resuming full training.

Boss Dave Penney will stick with Kieran Lee as his right-back and is likely to make only one enforced change.

That comes as a result of striker Daniel Nardiello’s hamstring injury, which could see Deane Smalley pushed up front alongside Pawel Abbott with Joe Colbeck coming in on the right of midfield.

Ryan Brooke – scorer of a goal for the reserves in midweek – is also in contention, as is the returning Keigan Parker (groin).

Alternatively, Penney’s efforts to bring in a loan in forward could yet come off ahead of a match which, should Athletic win, could push the team up four places to 15th in the League One table.

Athletic (from): Brill, Lee, Hazell, Gregan, Jacobson; Smalley, Stephens, Whitaker, Taylor, Worthington, Abbott, Eaves, Colbeck, Furman, Aljofree, Black, Flahavan, Marrow, Brooke, Parker.

Wycombe manager Gary Waddock reckons the battle to avoid relegation will “go right down to the wire”.

The Chairboys are second bottom, seven points adrift of safety with only 11 matches remaining.

Wanderers are hopeful that loan duo Alan Bennett and Julian Kelly will stay with the club beyond the expiry of their loan spells tomorrow.

The pair have helped the club to three clean sheets in their time at Adams Park.

Wycombe (from): Heaton, Woodman, Hinshelwood, Bennett, Kelly, Keates, Mousinho, Phillips, McLeod, Beavon, Harrold, Pittman, Revell, Bloomfield, Shearer, Westwood, Montrose, Hunt, Ainsworth.

Penney hasnt a clue, takes him half the season to realise dale stephens is the best midfielder weve got. Now he has no one to score yet has not given a chance for Ryan brooks penney cant spot a good player full stop.Lets o grady go as well, wont let ryan have a chance when he has come on and when hes had some service he has scored, stay up or go down come the end of the season and penney has to go, get Jim gannon in

Did Penney not notice that when Nardilello went off and Smalley went up front and Colbeck came onto the right that the attacking threat stopped, Smalley is not and will never be a centre forward, stick either Eaves or Brooke up front and leave a forward to do a forwards job.

play any of the lads apart parker no time for him like the bricklayer useless

Another DP classic on the OAFC website. About K.Lee, at the beginning of the season he told him he wasn't wanted, now all of a sudden he's a good player, with excellent distribution. Another example of a player already at the club not given a chance until one of the flops he has brought in is injured. Also Penney renews search for a striker but in his words 'there is no great urgency' Does he not realise we are back to square one on the striker front, the man is a fool.

spdij666 you numpty. shut up. Penney gave stevens his chance and has handle the brill situation excellently and its penneys doing that he is now playing well.
Brooke has played and done nothing so of course smalley will go up to. Through lack of options due to injuries.
was it penneys fault nardiello got injured? penney brought him in and he looked good.

Reading interviews by Dave Penny and listening to the constant contradiction of everything he says, its clear this man hasn't got a clue. He got wins aginst poor teams not through tatics, more by luck than judgement. He has alienated the clubs fans with his mocking and couldn't care less attitude.
If Oldham are to survive (and not just in league 1) this man has to go now and take his backroom staff with him, before its too late. Ohhh and Jim Gannon wont leave Peterborough for Oldham!

Jim Gannon is Peterbrough manager, however he is only on a short term contract until summer, and if he doesn't get his way over who actually runs the football side of things at Peterbrough then there is a chance he will leave, but i still don't think he would be any good for Oldham

lazyboy i wpould put it down to a little luck on penneys part that dale is doing well for oldham.
you forget he was shezzas signing at first penney didnt want him along with kieran lee.
if it wasnt for worthingtons injury and the fact he cant attract any decent players dale would still be out on loan for sure.
luck not judgement.
and as for brill nothing to do with penney either. the pessamist in me is waiting for a brill clanger its a matter of time. the clean sheets are mostly down to gregan

New phrase 'In for a Penney, out for the count'. That seems to be the story of Latics since the arrival of Mr P.

The "Have your say" segment at the end of these articles are just mouth pieces for idiots who have no idea & too much time on there hands. Jim Gannon? Dream on! Get behind the players & the manager & show them your support!

Will PENNEY DFEND BRILL after that schoolboy error, HOW BAD IS HE. We were poor again today and got lucky to get a draw. ref was a joke and so is PENNEY. He needs to GO NOW. We were so light up front as well. Thought Gregan, whitts did ok and yet parker and Smalley were poor and Taylor is not interested these days. All comes down to the MANAGER. 2 points dropped. Give fLAHAVAN HIS CHANCE.No push from midfield to the forwards either.

A very poor Wycombe side made Latics look absolutely dire and clueless, please go Penney sooner rather than later.

oh dear another brill clanger as predicted on friday.
eh all that that brill talk last week lazyboy looking silly now
