Latics see red at Jarrett exit

Addicks boss accused over sending-off

JASON Jarrett's red card at Charlton left Athletic players, management and club officials fuming.

The centre-back will serve an automatic one-match ban after picking up two yellow cards at the Valley, meaning he will be absent from manager Paul Dickov's line-up for the home game against Yeovil Town on Saturday.

There was little argument with the first of his two bookings, for a first-half foul on Lee Martin.

But Jarrett's second was handed out by referee Rob Shoebridge three minutes from time after a foul was awarded despite there being precious little contact between him and home winger Kyel Reid.

Controversially, Addicks boss Phil Parkinson was not slow to visibly relay his feeling to the match officials that the 30-year-old should see red.

And, despite originally appearing willing to take no action other than giving than a free-kick, Shoebridge then sent Jarrett from the field.

The player registered his own displeasure by flicking the ball towards Charlton's dug-out on his way to the changing rooms, sparking a mini-melee.

Parkinson was unrepentant afterwards, defending his own conduct and slamming Jarrett.

“I don’t think you could argue with the second yellow card," he said.

“I think their bench was a bit annoyed that we appealed, but it was a foul and I think any bench, when it happens right in front of you, would have done the same.

“The lad got himself in more trouble by booting the ball at our bench. He might have missed and hit a young girl or lady in the crowd.

“You can’t do that. You take your punishment and you get off the pitch.”

Dickov believes Jarrett was innocent, stating: “I don’t think it was a sending-off. I have seen it again and we don’t actually think it was a foul, never mind a yellow card.

“I spoke to the referee about it and he made an honest decision. I put my point across and he told me what he was thinking at the time."

Athletic chief executive Alan Hardy made his feelings clear.

"The incident was blown up out of all proportion by the actions of their bench and their players," said Hardy, who confirmed that due to FIFA rules Athletic are unable to appeal against yellow cards.

The 1-1 draw at Charlton resulted in Athletic slipping a place to second in the npower League One table, with Carlisle moving top on goal difference.

ATHLETIC don't anticipate that Saturday's home match with Yeovil at Boundary Park will be postponed.

Yesterday’s fire at the ground caused electrical damage, taking out CCTV footage in two-thirds of the ground.

"We don't anticipate any problems with the match going ahead as planned, but there is a lot of work to be done before then," said Mr Hardy.

Football again being dragged into the gutter, Parkinson has a reputation for stirring it when it suits him, on this occasion he knew his team might have a chance of stealing the result if Latics had only 10 men.

Football is fast becoming a disgrace, with all sportsmanship being dragged out of the game by cheats.

Watch the video, how can that be a foul ?... the guy was walking past and saw his opportunity to cheat.

Well done Paul D and the team, great result correct one would have meant 3pts.

The ball bounced 3 times before it even reached the Charlton bench so saying it could have 'hit a young girl or elderly person in the crowd' is not only rubbish but inflammatory. Why didn't he say it could have hit an 18 stone guy for example?

Great result and performance again. I'm so impressed with Dickov and Taggart, best management team in this division by a country mile, if the players continue to take on board their work ethic the playoffs are well within reach.

"“The lad got himself in more trouble by booting the ball at our bench. He might have missed and hit a young girl or lady in the crowd."

It's ok Phil, Jason knew it was a gentleman and a young boy who were sitting there and we all know that there is no problem hitting them with a football.

They were excellent. Taylor & Smalley looked short of match practice and Kieron Lee should've drilled that clearance away with his left foot, but apart from that, they were truely superb.

Brill caught everything. Blacky marshalled their right winger excellently all day. Furman and Stephens remind me of Milligan and Henry. Even little DJ looked like he'd been playing for years! I dare say Feeney and OOH-MAY TOON-KARA will be our most effective front two.

Keep it up lads.

Watched the video till I'm dizzy, and there is no way that a foul was committed. Parkinson needs to get some glasses and sooner rather than later. He was disgraceful and through him we lose Jarrett for the Yeovil game. He has been superb this season, as have all the players under the Dickov/Taggart regime. Here's to the Champonship without a doubt, if the players continue in the same vein for the rest of the season. Come on you Blues.

I agree with Latics Observer. Football is now a disgrace, with players trying to cheat their way to a win all the time. Any player who rolls about on the floor feigning injury after the minimal of contact should be sent off for cheating. Why can a rugby player can be tackled hard to the floor and just get up, yet a footballer rolls about as though he has been shot ? The answer - they are cheats and are being taught to be so.

Good result. Encouraging signs. PD and GT are doing a grand job by all accounts.

reading Parkinsons comments"it may have hit a young girl or lady"does this mean that only young girls or ladies watch Charlton!!Another great result for the boys, lets keep it going against Yeovil
