Jones: Come and get me, Latics

FREE agent Steve Jones has issued a “come and get me” plea to Athletic after turning down a deal at Motherwell in favour of a move back to the North-West.
The winger (34), who started his career at Chadderton, still has family in the Failsworth area.

He has already rejected a move to npower League Two team Bristol Rovers and will instead bide his time in the hope that Athletic — or another club in the region — offer him a contract.

Boss Paul Dickov has moulded a squad of players predominantly in their early 20s, but may see Jones’ experience as a plus point, in view of the fact his young charges ran out of steam both physically and mentally in the second half of last season.

“Looking back, it is strange that I never played for Latics because I virtually did a tour of the North-West early in my career,” said Jones.

“After leaving Chadderton for Blackpool, I went to Bury, Chorley and Rochdale, but not Oldham. I did score against them for Walsall, though.

“You never know what can happen, especially now I am out of contract.

“It would be nice to play for Latics because most of my family still live in Failsworth and I am still in touch with a lot of Chadderton lads on Facebook.

“I want to come back and join a club in the North-West because, as much as I enjoyed my time in Scotland, it is a bit too far away from the important people in my life.

“I have received a couple of offers, including one from Bristol Rovers, but the distance is too great so I am going to keep my options open this summer.

“Hopefully, something closer to home will be put on the table.”
