Latics injury scare

DEAN Bouzanis handed Athletic their first injury scare of the season.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper hurt his ankle at the weekend and took to Twitter to declare: “Bad times in training with injury, waiting for the results. Hopefully it’s not a broken fibula and is just bone bruising.”

In fact the injury wasn’t as severe as he feared

Though unlikely to play in the first pre-season friendly at Mossley on Wednesday (7pm kick-off), the former Liverpool prospect should be fully fit for the start of the new seasaon.

In the absence of injured first-choice keeper Alex Cisak towards the end of last season, Bouzanis took on the number one role and played in nine games.

His short-term absence opens the doorway for another of the club’s Aussie stopper trio, Liam Jacob, to show what he can do in an Athletic shirt for the first time.

Elsewhere, Filipe Morais has signed a three-year deal at Athletic’s npower League One rivals Stevenage. The 26-year-old winger, who turned down the chance to stay at Boundary Park, will line up against Paul Dickov’s side when Boro travel north on Saturday, August 25.
