Derbyshire’s FA Cup double richly deserved

I TOLD Matt Derbyshire before the FA Cup game that he would score.

And he did - twice - as we put in a superb performance against Doncaster, a team joint-top of League One.

I was absolutely delighted for him. He works his socks off for the good of the team, week-in, week-out.

On occasions recently he has been isolated up-front. But on Saturday, we supported him and got numbers into the penalty area. That was the difference and that was why he got his two goals.

Watching the game from the bench, it was clear Rovers were well on top for the first 20 minutes. Honestly, we could have folded. Instead, we played completely without fear for the rest of the game and really expressed ourselves. It was an awesome performance.

We showed real character to recover from the early blow and score three really good goals.

Straight after the game, though, the talk was not how well we had performed. The focus turned quickly towards how we can carry on this form into our league season.

We must now use it as a foundation for picking up points across the remainder of this month.

There are five games between now and the turn of the year, starting with Colchester on Saturday.

The Us aren’t in the best form at the moment, but it will be a difficult place to bring back points from, as they are better than their league position shows.

If we are not at our best then they will cause us a lot of problems.

If we play as we did for 70 minutes against Doncaster, then we will beat any team in this division.

The standard has been set. Now we have to maintain it
