Raw recruit’s dynamism excites Johnson

RHYS Turner will have to wait a little longer to show his manager exactly what he can do.

The postponement of yesterday’s scheduled reserves fixture at Tranmere denied Lee Johnson the chance to take a first-hand look at his recent signing from Stockport.

Athletic’s manager has watched Turner perform impressively in the Skrill Conference North. If he can be as effective against defences in Sky Bet League One remains to be seen.

The 18 year old has at least looked sharp in training, Johnson says, hinting at a level of raw speed not evident elsewhere in the squad.

“Perhaps the one thing we are lacking is that bit of genuine pace,” Johnson told the Chronicle.

“Jonson Clarke-Harris has it, but sometimes doesn’t use it getting in behind defenders.

“So we will be looking closely at Rhys. I have seen him play for Stockport, but it is different at that level. Rhys has literally only been training with us for a couple of days. But he has looked good, positive and dynamic.”

Turner’s six goals in 14 appearances for County in what was his first season at the club alerted others to his ability. Luton Town tried to sign him.

Having landed his man, Johnson is keen to see how he initially compares to fringe strikers like Kirk Millar and under-18s hot-shot Jordan Bove.
