DANNY Philliskirk said it felt like Athletic had claimed a memorable win when Korey Smith’s superb effort hit the net in the final minute at Leyton Orient.

Athletic’s top scorer and James Dayton were first on the scene to celebrate the equaliser with a dancing embrace in front of those supporters who had made the long trip south.

Philliskirk’s elation at gaining a draw that had seemed to be eluding the visitors was clear. After a sweeping move, an opportunity presented itself to score a goal similar to that which won the Crawley game.

“It was a great strike into the top corner – and me and ‘Daytsy’ were so overwhelmed we just decided to run around. We didn’t know what to do. But we deserved it. We played really well at times.

“We had chances to win the game, never mind draw. It could be a massive point for us come the end of the season.”

Athletic underlined their resolve by battling away for the whole of the contest and Philliskirk now sees little to be afraid of against Brentford.

“It just shows the character we’ve got in the group,” said Philliskirk. “To come to Leyton Orient and to be disappointed not to take all three points shows how well we played.”
