DAVID Worrall’s return to form has been hailed by his manager Lee Johnson.

The loan midfield man (23) struggled with fitness in his early weeks at Boundary Park, due to a previous groin operation and little game time at parent club Rotherham.

But in away games at Leyton Orient and Bradford, the Droylsden-born wide man has looked much sharper, providing thrust down the right flank as Athletic have embarked on an unbeaten run currently stretching to five outings.

“For me David Worrall is back now to what I know and expect of him,” said Johnson, who had his players in for training this morning.

“He is the player I wanted to sign. His fitness is better than it has been and he is looking wiry, mobile and offering us a lot.”

Worrall has been a constant fixture in the five-game run featuring an unchanged line-up and will hope to get the nod at Colchester on Good Friday. Three points gained in that fixture would go a long way towards guaranteeing Athletic’s safety in the league. Johnson would rather his men took it upon themselves to climb out of trouble.

“We started off the weekend four points clear and we finished four points clear and gained a game on the sides around us,” the manager said.

“It is about what we do now, without a doubt. “We go to Colchester to win the game — you can’t simply rely on other sides to do you favours and we won’t.”
