Chances go begging again

LEE Johnson was left cursing another tale of missed opportunities as Athletic lost at Deepdale.

Jack King’s fourth-minute goal was enough to give Preston the win, despite a second half in which Oldham dominated possession and territory.

A late Jonathan Forte effort, blocked by Jamie Jones in the North End goal, was as close as Johnson’s wasteful side got. The result leaves Athletic in 21st in the league, with only two points from four games.

“We dominated the second half and had chances throughout,” Johnson said. “We just can’t score despite having very good chances.

“Looking at it, you might think we have to get someone in. But we dominated against a top side in the division – just not in the middle of the goal.

“That was it really. I do feel quite low, because what more can you do?”

The opening goal represented the third time in four league games that Athletic have fallen behind in the opening 10 minutes.

“I’m disappointed, but we did play well against a top team. Had we come out and won 2-1, we would be labelled as geniuses and the players as heroes.

“We haven’t and sometimes you are just a victim of how it happens on the day.

“Now we have to go to Doncaster and try to put in that sort of performance but with the finishing touches.”
