The injured George Elokobi shows the kind of determination that has made him a fans-favourite.
DEFENSIVE powerhouse George Elokobi has dismissed doubters who questioned his move to Athletic.
Experienced Cameroon-born centre-back Elokobi, formerly of Wolves, joined Lee Johnson’s men the day before the season opener at Colchester.
Some onlookers clearly felt the 28 year old could have found a place in a higher or more fashionable club than Athletic after six years with the Midlands giants.
But Elokobi is happy at SportsDirect.com Park - as he has shown with recent performances on the pitch.
Since coming on as a late substitute against Colchester, Elokobi has started all seven subsequent games and been key in the last three, all won without conceding a goal.
He said: “When I chose to come to Oldham it was about trying to bring my experience to the team and also just to work hard and play games.
“I’m enjoying it here. Some have asked me ‘why Oldham?’ My reply is this is a good football club. I see no reason why I shouldn’t have moved here. I made the decision without having to think twice.
“Everyone here is working hard and it is a good unit. The team spirit is amazing. It comes from the top. We have been getting things right.”
Elokobi, and all Athletic fans, will hope to continue the upward spiral again on Saturday with another win against Gillingham.
