ADAM Lockwood is hoping to be ready for action in under a month.

The injured centre-back (32) is gearing up to start running again after a fitness regime that has mainly so far featured swimming and cycling following his pre-season foot injury.

“I think I’ll be entering a few triathlons,” joked the Athletic club captain.

The former Yeovil and Doncaster defender isn’t putting a firm date on his readiness. Nor is he pinning hopes on just slotting back in - emphasising the current strong form of George Elokobi and James Wilson. But he is looking at being available before the Chesterfield game on October 18, and possibly for the home game against Walsall seven days earlier.

He remains cautious following the hard-ground incident in a warm-up at Barrow: “It felt like a gunshot going off under my foot. They say when you snap an Achilles tendon it’s a similar thing.

“It has responded quite well and hopefully will continue to do so. Everything’s going to plan. We just have to be a bit careful and take it a step at a time.”

While the process continues, he continues to help the management team by assessing each game from high in the stands.

“I’ve tried to be as useful as I can,” said Lockwood, who already has coaching qualifications under his belt. “I want to play as big a part as I can to help the lads.”
