Corney determined to see stand completed

ATHLETIC chairman Simon Corney has accepted that a level of trust has been lost with supporters after the “extraordinary” events surrounding the failed Ched Evans deal.

Corney said yesterday that “enough is enough” for his 12-year association with the club, and that his interest has waned. His exit strategy most likely includes finding an appropriate buyer following completion of the new North Stand.

The club’s New York-based owner was once virtually full-time at SportsDirect.com Park when operating as managing director, but now spends more time in the United States on business.

But Corney stressed his desire to see a conclusion to the crucial development, and his optimism over Athletic’s future.

“We have come through an extraordinary period in our club’s history,” reads Corney’s message, published on the club website and representing the first official board-level statement since the collapse of the chase for Evans last Thursday.

“There is no doubt relationships with the club have been affected and a level of trust lost. For this, as chairman, I take responsibility. My commitment remains as strong as ever.

“We continue to face significant challenges, but I am genuinely excited about the plans we have put in place to ensure long-term future without the need for further investment.

“As I have always said, if a buyer comes forward who is able to take things to another level, I will consider selling. That buyer has to be the right person and have the best interests of the club at heart.

“It is now time to draw a line under the events of recent weeks and move on. We have a club to run and goals to achieve and the board, staff and I are determined to see this great club prosper.”
