Danny’s a diamond geezer

DANNY Philliskirk admits he would enjoy being on the score sheet more often - but is happy the team ethic at last paid dividends at Fleetwood.

The 23 year old hasn’t found the net in the league since the 4-1 win over Coventry in October. His only goal since then has been in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie at home to Preston.

But operating at the peak of manager Lee Johnson's “diamond” midfield formation, Philliskirk’s task is about more than being on the end of scoring chances.

As a supremely hard-working cog in an effective machine at Fleetwood, he is content to prove his worth with the help of team-mates.

“I would like to score a few more goals, obviously,” Philliskirk said. “We were in a bad patch against Yeovil and MK Dons, but I feel that is behind us now.

“I felt back to my best at Fleetwood - but the whole team was. When we play like that, we can beat anybody. If I can get a few more goals to my name I’ll be happy.

“When you have two strikers working like that in front of you, it gives you a chance to win balls in midfield, in front of Liam Kelly who does his job unbelievably. Players around you help you for sure.”

Philliskirk admitted the three points at Highbury was a major pick-me-up for the players after a tough run.

“We needed it, didn't we? Especially on the back of a few disappointing results - even though we have been playing well,” he added. “Especially against Doncaster and Crewe, we didn’t pick up the points that we probably deserved. But we are back on track.”

Philliskirk came close to scoring last Saturday; his fierce close-range shot somehow deflected behind by the arm of goalkeeper Chris Maxwell.

It mattered little to Athletic, though, as following the resultant corner kick Carl Winchester smashed in the opening goal.

“Getting the win was the most important thing. The lads stuck together and we deserved it in the end.”
