DANNY Philliskirk is a major injury doubt for Athletic as the club gears up for tomorrow’s crucial clash at Scunthorpe United.

Attacking midfielder Philliskirk (23) was crudely hacked down by former Athletic defender Jean-Yves Mvoto during the first half of Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Barnsley.

The former Chelsea starlet has been a first-team regular this season but it appears touch and go whether his ankle will recover in time.

Athletic boss Lee Johnson said: “It was a superficial knock so we’re hopeful in that respect. It was a bad one so it will depend on how well the swelling and bruising go down. I’d probably say he is 50/50.

“We’ve got choices though, and maybe we will freshen it up a little after two games in a week.

“There are players who have been knocking on the door for their chance, so I might have a look at that tomorrow.”

Johnson drafted front-man Conor Wilkinson back into the squad from Bolton on loan and striker Rhys Murphy from Dagenham. But Murphy has only an outside chance of making the bench.

Another more likely replacement for Philliskirk is Jacob Mellis, who joined Athletic on loan from Blackpool last month.

Following Tuesday’s defeat, Athletic have a second chance to climb to fifth place in the table tomorrow - though Johnson admits the current run of four games in a fortnight is proving tough going.

“To be in touch at this stage and to have another opportunity to go fifth is superb. It’s never going to be easy at this club but we’ll always remain positive and confident.”
