DREAM DEBUT: Joel Coleman clears the ball upfield against Crewe.
IT proved to be a dream Athletic debut for goalkeeper Joel Coleman at Crewe on Saturday.
The 19-year-old academy product couldn’t have asked for more than a clean sheet and a victory - and he later dedicated the result and his performance to his grandfather, Mike Coleman.
Mike was at the game, proud to watch his grandson make his Athletic bow with a solid performance and perfect outcome as he deputised for loan goalkeeper Jake Kean.
Asked to reflect on a hugely satisfactory 1-0 victory, Joel was more concerned with praising ultra-dedicated Mike, who has followed the young player’s career from day one.
“I’d like to say a massive thank-you to my granddad,” said Joel. “He was with me when I first signed for Oldham when I was 12. He’s been an inspiration, ferrying me around everywhere, sometimes three or four times a week.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s been freezing cold or whatever, my granddad has always watched me play, train, in all weathers, so this clean sheet was definitely for him.”
Coleman junior, who produced one particularly stunning save in the second half at Crewe, is set to get another opportunity tonight in the home derby crunch clash with Rochdale.
He added: “It’s been difficult at times having to wait for my chance, but hopefully I can stay in the team. Jake went back to Blackburn on Saturday morning for treatment on his injury, but he sent me a text to wish me good luck which was good of him.
“If I do get another chance I’ll be ready. It’s going to be a massive game, and we all can’t wait for it.”
