COVENTRY 1 ATHLETIC 1

REDA Johnson's controversial late header denied Athletic three points at the Ricoh Arena.

The powerful centre-back powered home an effort from close range in added time off a right-wing cross – seconds after Connor Brown looked to have been tripped in front of an assistant referee.

Danny Philliskirk had earlier returned to the club he used to play for to score the only goal of the first half.

In the end, despite a solid defensive effort, heavy pressure from the home side told.

Coventry started strongly and almost took the lead when Nick Proschwitz's weak header from no more than six yards out was clawed away by a diving Joel Coleman.

In the 13th minute, Philliskirk struck. Winchester was released down the left by Mike Jones's quickly-taken free-kick and his cut-back was converted left-footed from the centre of the box by the ex-Sky Blues forward.

Coventry felt they should have had a penalty for a shove by Philliskirk on Chris Stokes and tested Coleman on numerous occasions through Jim O'Brien, John Fleck, Grant Ward and Proschwitz again.

James Wilson fizzed a half-volley over the bar from 40 yards out and Athletic withstood home pressure up to the half-time whistle.

Tony Mowbray's side began the second half on the front foot, enjoying the majority of territory without seriously testing Coleman.

Ward hit a pot-shot high and wide and substitute Simeon Jackson was out off enough by Adam Lockwood not to get a clean strike on Frank Nouble's low centre.

Rhys Murphy came on for Rhys Turner as Athletic tried to get going in some way as an attacking force.

When the outstanding Coleman had to save sharply from James Maddison, Athletic appeared set to take away three points.

Seconds after the board showed an additional six minutes was to be played, though, Johnson struck.
