ATHLETIC boss Darren Kelly has suggested powerhouse defender Anthony Gerrard could be a summer transfer target.

Liverpool-born Gerrard (29), the cousin of Premier League legend Steven, made a huge impact after joining Athletic in March on loan from Championship outfit Huddersfield.

He played six games and in that time Athletic conceded only four goals. Whether new boss Kelly does decide the free agent remains to be seen..

Kelly said: “I know the guys speak highly of him. I have seen him and been impressed. There are a lot of players we have in mind and realistically we won’t get them all. I will chat to them and then it is about them buying into what I want to do.

“If they come to Oldham it may not be about the money, but the achievement of a promotion.

“I need that leadership in there at centre-back. The spine of my team has to be strong and there will be experience mixed with younger players. I have to have a good look at areas to strengthen.”

Athletic have four friendly pre-season dates now pinned down.

Vanarama Conference side Chester FC host the club in a game that will be played at the Deva Stadium on July 11; Stirling Albion have confirmed they will welcome Athletic on July 17 at Forthbank.

The most high-profile clash so far sees Championship Blackburn travel to Oldham on July 25. A home match against Bolton awaits at some stage, while Athletic are also on their travels to Carlisle’s Brunton Park on August 1.
