ATHLETIC’S players were in for their first day of pre-season today, with boss Darren Kelly eager to banish back-to-work blues.

Fitness testing at the University of Bolton gave Kelly his first chance for a hands-on approach with his squad.

The health of the squad is good and Kelly is preaching positivity as he gets down to the business of readying his players for the season.

“I’m looking forward to seeing plenty of happy, smiling faces,” he said. “I want us to get away from that feeling of dread with regard to training sessions. We certainly don’t want any miserable faces.

“It’s got to be hard work and we’ll make sure it will be, but training also needs to be enjoyable.”

Away from training, which switches to grass tomorrow, Kelly is aiming to land new centre-backs and is also keen for another goalkeeper to push talented youngster Joel Coleman.

“Competition is going to be crucial for Joel if he is going to be as successful as we hope he will be,” Kelly added.

“Goalkeeper is a crucial position in the team and Joel needs to be kept on his toes. I believe he’s got an amazing future in the game, but to continue his development he needs to be challenged all the time. He needs to make sure he maintains his high standards.”

Kelly has also been delighted with support from the Athletic hierarchy, particularly in his early transfer dealings.

“Since the day I walked through the door, (chairman) Simon Corney and the board have been great with me. They’ve backed every proposal I’ve put to them, and I am very grateful for their support.”

ATHLETIC’S home clash with Middlesbrough in the first round of the Capital One Cup will be on August 12. Middlesbrough fans will be stationed in the ZenOffice Chaddy End, which will house away fans for the first time. No details yet on which stands will be open to Athletic supporters on the night.
