RYAN Hiwat will feature in tonight’s friendly clash at Halifax - and the Dutch winger aims to impress during his Athetic trial.

The 19 year old, schooled at PSV Eindhoven, aims to win a permanent contract and effectively replaces Alen Ploj. The Slovenian forward hasn’t been offered terms despite featuring in every friendly game to date.

“Ploj has gone now, but we will continue to monitor him,” said Athletic manager Darren Kelly.

“We are taking a look at Ryan over the next few days and he will play a part at Halifax. I was made aware of him through a good contact and he comes highly recommended.”

Another trialist, former Exeter City midfielder Jimmy Keohane, remains, as does centre-back Gavin Gunning, who has yet to sign a permanent contract despite a long training stint with the club.

“I am sure there will be more activity in the market soon,” Kelly added. “We are being proactive.”

Athletic are currently clear of serious injuries and only players nursing slight pulls and strains will be rested at the Shay.

Kelly is keen to get the entire squad match fit, which is why he seems occasionally to make substitution choices arguably to the detriment of team cohesion.

“We need to give everyone the time they need,” he said. “You never know what is round the corner. We are clear of injuries at the moment, but should the need arise we need people fit and ready to step in straight away.”
