Dunn casts his net

HE has only a shoestring budget to work with, but Athletic boss David Dunn hopes he can soon bring in new players to strengthen the squad.

The 35-year-old interim boss has already run the rule over one trialist forward with plenty of League One experience at a private reserves friendly with Manchester United yesterday.

It is so far unclear whether Athletic will offer the player a contract; the emergency loan window is open for temporary fixes as the team now languishes in 20th place in the league. He might alternatively opt to scour the market for unsigned players.

“I am sure I have the full support of the board,” said Dunn. “There are a few players who are free agents and though the budget will be minimal, I will try to use my contacts as best I can.”

Dunn’s first game in charge is at Doncaster on Saturday. Jonathan Forte will sit that out due to suspension, but captain Liam Kelly is up and running again in training and could spring a surprise by coming back into contention. Brian Wilson is also due to return.

Dunn is still not saying if he intends to consider himself as a member of the team. He might name himself on the bench, allowing him to watch alongside assistant manager Dean Holden and first-team coach Keith Brown.

“It is something I need to discuss with Dean and Keith,” said Dunn. “Everyone I have spoken to, people I trust, says it is difficult to do. I’ll see how it goes.”
