BACK HOME . . . Richard Eckerlsey wants to make the most of his latest opportunity on his return to England.
FULL-BACK Richard Eckersley is delighted to be back in English football and is determined to make the most of his big chance with Athletic.
Eckersley (26) was signed by boss David Dunn last Friday on a three-month contract, after spending three years in Canada with Toronto FC then a season with the New York Red Bulls in America.
The former Manchester United junior, who played for Burnley, Plymouth, Bradford and Bury before his switch to Canada, said: “I’m really looking forward to this new challenge. To be honest I’d been wanting to get back to England for around 12 months, and coming to Oldham has given me a great platform to get back into the swing of things over here. I’ve just got to get myself back up to speed again.
“It’s been great with the boys here and playing football again. It’ll take me a little bit of time, but I’m a naturally fit guy so hopefully I can get involved quite soon. I’m here to play football.”
Eckersley met boss Dunn when he trained with Blackburn at the end of last season. He has been impressed with Athletic in his first week.
“I think they’re good,” he said. “If you look around the changing room there are lots of good players.
It’s still very much early doors yet, but with people like David and Dean Holden coaching I don’t think we can go wrong. It’s just a matter of time.”
