Dynamic duo look to bow out with aplomb

JAMES Maddison and Adam Armstrong both have special incentives to finish with a flourish as the curtain draws on a disappointing campaign for Coventry.

The teenage pair, who both seem destined for brighter lights than League One next season, are set to play as two of a front three that could also feature 21-year-old Rúben Lameiras — a potential talent to watch out for.

Maddison (19) bids farewell to his home-town club on Sunday, having been loaned back to the Sky Blues following a January transfer to Norwich City.

As for Armstrong, the on-loan Newcastle United forward is stuck on 19 goals for the season, having had one chalked off and given to Marc-Antoine Fortune in last week’s win over Sheffield United.

As one of the stars of the season, it may not be long before the 19-year-old graduates to play for Newcastle’s first XI.

“Should I have put James in for his last game at Coventry — on reflection perhaps I should have had him on the pitch or on the bench,” said City manager Tony Mowbray, after omitting Maddison from the squad for the 3-1 win over the Blades at the
Ricoh Arena.

“The fact is that I had a lot of dilemmas picking the team — I must have changed 15 times in the space of two days.

“At one stage I was going to use four or five of the under-21s and leave out the players who won’t be here next year because they’re loan players going back to their parent clubs or probably won’t be
kept on.

“In the end we decided that rather than making it too experimental we’d put out a side that we thought could win the game to make up for a very disappointing performance
at Doncaster.

“Luckily that’s the way it worked out and at the end they stayed behind to show their appreciation of the team and vice versa.”

Coventry’s play-off aspirations have long-since evaporated after a strong start to the season. They have won three of their last four fixtures, though, as Mowbray decides how to shape his squad for 2016-17.
