'Sheridan's belief music to my ears'

JOHN Sheridan beat two rival candidates to the Notts County job after detailing his ambition to take the club right up to the Championship.

Magpies owner Ray Trew - who still has the Meadow Lane club up for sale - said after awarding ex-Athletic boss a three-year contract that his past record and positive attitude were factors that swung it his way.

Notts County are expected to exit a transfer embargo soon, with funds being made available to sustain a promotion push from Sky Bet League One.

'BUZZING'

"There were three candidates in the running and they all would have got the fans buzzing," Trew told the 'Nottingham Post', of a move that has caused consternation among Athletic supporters.

"But in the end we decided on John, who has obviously worked with the chief executive, Jason Turner, at Newport and Plymouth.

"They have an excellent relationship and John's track record has proven what a good manager he is.

"He's won the League Two title with Chesterfield, he's won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy too.

"He's been to the play-offs with Plymouth and Oldham.

"And the job he did last season with both Newport and Oldham again was magnificent.

"He is a strong character, he wants to go on a journey and the fact he wants to take Notts into the Championship was like music to my ears.

"He will be given a very competitive budget to bring in players because we want to get out of this league."

Sheridan says that County are currently in a false position in relation to the size of the club.

"Notts County is a big club - far bigger than its current league position suggests," he said. "I know what is required to succeed."
