ATHLETIC'S search for a new manager continues to rumble on, with the latest talk being that Paul Dickov could be set for a shock return to the club.

Sean O'Driscoll has already spoken to Athletic and he could step into an advisory role, with Dickov - out of work since losing his job at Doncaster back in September of last year - working alongside him, as boss for the second time.

While the idea has been floated, though, it is not clear at this stage whether it is ready to be confirmed.

Athletic drew up a new short list following the disappointment of missing out on Steve Evans, despite the ex-Leeds and Rotherham manager having agreed personal terms.

Officials accept that time is of the essence, with what is currently a wafer-thin squad back in for pre-season testing on Friday at the University of Bolton.

Dickov (43) had a mixed spell last time out at SportsDirect.com Park.

His tenure began very promisingly, with the team climbing to fifth in League One by February, 2011, before an injuries and illness crisis served to decimate the squad.

Two seasons later, Dickov was at the helm for the brilliant FA Cup run that took in wins at Nottingham Forest and then at home to Liverpool, only to lose his job a week after the Anfield giants were toppled due to poor league form.

The former Manchester City and Blackburn striker was appointed at Doncaster ahead of the 2013-14 season, but could not keep the club in the Championship following promotion.

After a 13th-placed finish the following year, he lost his job six games into last season, which ultimately ended in relegation to League Two under Darren Ferguson.

ATHLETIC have arranged a fifth pre-season friendly.

The club will take on Wigan at SportsDirect.com Park on Tuesday, July 26 (7.30pm kick-off).

The same opponents will then return two weeks later to face Athletic in the first round of the EFL Cup.

That tie has been confirmed for Tuesday, August 9 (7.45pm) and prices have been set at £10 adults, £5 over-65s and under-18s and £2 under-12s when accompanied by an adult.

The same pricing structure is in operation for two home pre-season friendlies against Huddersfield Town on Saturday, July 16 (3pm), and Preston North End on Tuesday, July 19 (7pm).
