RYAN Flynn could become the most high-profile signing yet of the new Stephen Robinson era.

The Scot (27), a free agent after surprisingly being released by Sheffield United, was today set for talks ahead of a potential deal that could see him take up a role as Athletic's midfield creator-in-chief.

Athletic are battling stiff competition for the ex-Liverpool academy man, star of the Blades' run to the semi-finals of the FA Cup two years ago and the last-four of the League Cup 12 months later.

Coventry have also been linked with a swoop for the versatile player, who can operate in central midfield and out wide as well as at right-back, after Sheffield United opted not to invoke a clause tying him to the club for a further year.

Having been at Bramall Lane for five seasons, Flynn - a scorer and stand-out performer in United's 3-0 home win over Athletic last term - made close to 200 appearances for the club and featured in three play-off campaigns.

Manager Robinson would be delighted if he can land Flynn and is also primed for discussions with defensive midfield man Mark Klok.

The Dutch player (23), who started out at Utrecht had a brief spell at Ross County three years ago, has more recently been plying his trade in Bulgaria.

Defensively, veteran Aaron Hughes (36), who played a prominent role for Northern Ireland in Euro 16 under first-team coach Robinson, is being tempted to continue his career by heading for SportsDirect.com Park.

Released by Melbourne City after a year in the A-League, the former Newcastle, Aston Villa and Fulham man is thought to be a target for Robinson as he bids to bag a highly experienced defensive leader.

"There's a couple of Northern Ireland internationals I'm currently speaking to," said Robinson, who held his first press conference yesterday after completing the signing of ex-Crystal Palace goalkeeper Chris Kettings.

MASSIVE

"I've spoken to one in particular. At this moment in time, he's not going to commit. It's something we're still working on. It would be a massive signing for Oldham."

Robinson, who took his squad to Blackburn for a training game today, is also on the trail of another centre-back from the Championship.

Meanwhile, Athletic director Anthony Gee says that while the club are in discussions with interested parties, there is nothing close in terms of a deal.

"There is no imminent buyer on the horizon," he told BBC Radio Manchester. "I am in negotiations and discussions with maybe five groups at the moment, but I don't want anyone to get too excited."
