Putting the graft in

ATHLETIC'S hard-running style is leaving behind some weary bodies as the fixtures mount up, but a pair of quick wide players could add a major injection of energy very soon.

Ryan McLaughlin showed pace and a willingness to put crosses into the box in a promising final-quarter showing at Preston. It was only the former Liverpool academy star's second substitute showing for Athletic as he builds towards full match fitness.

And fellow winger Calaum Jahraldo-Martin's hamstring strain curtailed his progress after he added spark in the home draw against Northampton, but the ex-Hull man is close to being ready for action again.

Both players could feature at some stage as Athletic ready themselves for a difficult outing at Bradford on Saturday.

Boss Stephen Robinson has other selection issues to address, as he bids to extend a three-match unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One.

Marc Klok ran out of steam at Deepdale and was replaced at half-time by Paul Green, who had a major influence in dictating play in a second half Athletic were in control of up until Preston's opening goal, which came firmly against the run of play.

Bill Mckay didn't play in midweek because of a tight groin and remains a doubt, though Jamie Reckord is due back following an infection.

And Robinson said that Jake Cassidy's first start of the season came at a difficult juncture due to issues at home.

"Lee Erwin and Jake Cassidy looked tired at Preston," Robinson said.

"It was a big shift and 'Cass' hasn't had any game time as his partner had a baby under complicated circumstances and he hasn't trained a lot. Credit to him and Lee for digging in, as Billy Mckay is not available to us at the moment.

"Ryan McLaughlin came on and showed little sparks of what he is about, putting in three or four great crosses and adding energy to it. When we get him fully fit, along with Calaum Jahraldo, we will add a bit more threat."

As for the new striker he is seeking, Robinson indicated he may have to switch from his number one loan target of recent weeks.

"We are as keen to get someone in as the fans are but we have to rely on a Premier League team," he added.

Athletic's reserves beat Fleetwood 2-0 in a friendly at Chapel Road. Brad Kay was on the mark after Carl Winchester's shot was parried and Brendan Glackin got the second.

FANS need to buy Bradford tickets from Athletic's ticket office before 3pm tomorrow in order to avoid paying an extra £5 on the day. Tickets, priced at £20 adults, £15 concessions, £10 under-16s and £5 under-11s, can also be bought online.
