A FAILSWORTH GP urged residents to visit their vulnerable neighbours this Christmas as his number one winter health tip.

Dr Zahid Chauhan called on Oldhamers to do their part to prevent isolation, which can have a "devastating effect" on health.

The senior partner of Medlock Medical Practice warned that isolation, as well as falling temperature, can cause depression and suicide attempts to spiral.

Mr Chauhan said: "Popping in to see your neighbour and spreading a little Christmas cheer may not seem like the most likely health tip a doctor would dispense at winter, but I genuinely believe it is the most important one.

"When everyone else is surrounded by loved ones and seemingly enjoying themselves, the vulnerable and the lonely can feel at their lowest.

"Depression can have devastating side-effects, ranging from heart disorders to increased alcohol and drug dependency.

"The appearance of your friendly face at their door could therefore make all the difference to their health."

The family doctor also encouraged residents to "ease up on the alcohol" and "put a cap on the snacks" over the festive period.

In efforts to keep away the bugs and colds, he reminded residents to keep their hands clean and cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Other tips included:

* Stay hydrated and warm, but don't be afraid of taking the odd brisk winter walk.

* Make sure you get your flu jab

* Eat a balanced diet and get plenty of sleep

* Think about who to contact when you are poorly - use the NHS Choices website as a guide
