CROMPTON House School has paid tribute to a popular former chemistry teacher who has died aged 58.

Nick Varney, who retired in 2014, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year.

He had moved to South Wales with his wife, Sue, and died in the early hours of February 13 surrounded by his family.

A book of remembrance has been opened at Crompton House which Mr Varney joined as head of chemistry in 1988. He had previously taught at Breezehill and Failsworth schools in Oldham.

A tribute on the school's website says: "He had a great sense of humour and was well known for his unpredictable chemistry demonstrations.

"He will be remembered by many for his untiring work backstage on many school productions as well as supporting the music department, particularly driving all the instruments to Tuscany for a school orchestra trip in 2010."

Mr Varney was also an active supporter of the school's Parents, Teachers and Friends Association and was its treasurer for nearly 20 years.

He also leaves three sons, Tristan, Jonathan and Christopher, and former colleagues will attend his funeral at Llanelli Crematorium on Friday (24th February) at 10am. Family flowers only are requested and donations can be made to Ty Bryngwyn Hospice.

Past and present Crompton House pupils, staff and parents who would like to add to the book of remembrance can email comments and photos to j.upton@cromptonhouse.org.
