Bus links to see Mahdlo youngsters home safely

Date published: 29 July 2014

EXTENDED safe transport links are being trialled to help young people get home from Mahdlo youth zone.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has worked with bus operator Stagecoach Manchester to extend bus service 78 — which it pays for — to run to the youth zone in Egerton Street, during Monday to Saturday evenings.

The change, will also reinstate evening bus links from the Lime Green Road area to Oldham and Manchester, and make it easy to get from the Mahdlo youth zone to Oldham Bus Station and directly on to Limeside, Hollinwood and Failsworth.

The move follows a review of local bus services alongside Oldham Council as part of the Get Oldham Working campaign.

It highlighted the need for improved evening access to employment opportunities and better bus links to provide safe access to the Youth Zone.

Councillor Mark Aldred, deputy chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “This is great news — around 250 young people currently use the youth zone every evening and they will now be able to get there safely by bus.

“I’d like to thank Stagecoach Manchester for agreeing to extend the service at no extra cost to the public purse.”

The Mahdlo Youth Zone, which opened in spring 2012, offers range of activities and opportunities that all young people from across Oldham can access for just 50p as a member.
