LANDMARK: George Glass and wife Gladys celebrate George’s 100th birthday with members of Brookdale bowls club.
A FORMER Japanese prisoner of war has celebrated his 100th birthday at the bowls club at which he has been a member for almost 50 years.
George Glass of New Moston was captured in 1942 and held captive for three years.
George, who has been married to wife Gladys (92) for 64 years, celebrated his 100th birthday with a card from the Queen... and by bowling a few ceremonial balls on the Brookdale green, where he won many competitions and played regularly until three years ago.
He said: “I’ve had a wonderful day. It’s great to celebrate with everybody at the club and they have all done me very well today.”
George said the secret to his long life was his loving marriage and some good luck along the way.
He said: “I’ve been very lucky over the years. My wife has been there for me all the way, even though we needed to get to know each other again after the war, and she has been a big part in me reaching this age.”
