WORK has started on Oldham’s new £6.25 million Hollinwood Academy special school.

Contractor Extraspace Solutions (UK) is clearing the site of the former Kaskenmoor School, next to the existing New Bridge School. Specialist design features and resources will be used in the construction of the Roman Road school, which will cater for 140 autistic-spectrum pupils.

The school will also share its sports hall with the community outside school hours.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, cabinet member for education, said: “This new school is fantastic news for local parents and families and it will improve education for children with autism. Hollinwood Academy will increase opportunities for children and young people from early years, into further and higher education and into employment.”
