Paul’s team tackles 25-hour challenge

A CHADDERTON racing driver is teaming up with a motorsport hero to take on the world’s longest - 25 hour - race.

Paul Wighton, who owns Drury Lane Auto Services in Hollinwood, has assembled a dream team to take part in the British Racing and Sports Car Club Fun Cup endurance championship.

The competition is a series of endurance races lasting between four to six hours each at the UK’s most prestigious race tracks — including Silverstone and Brands Hatch — and a gruelling 25-hour race at the famous Spa-Francorchamps track in Belgium.

Paul will be joined by former professional driver Antonio Armelin and one of motor racing’s best-known names, Anthony Reid, who together make up Drury Lane Racing. The trio will each put in shifts behind the wheel of a highly-modified Volkswagen Beetle.

Paul’s recruitment of Anthony Reid to his team has raised a few eyebrows in the motorsport world as he is regarded by many as the fastest-ever driver not to make it to Formula One.

Paul said: “To have someone of Anthony’s calibre on our team is fantastic. We have a great driver line-up, meaning we can compete at the highest level. It’s great that all three of us are doing this together, we’re all friends from years ago. I first met Anthony over 30 years ago when he was the judge of a competition I was in to find the next Formula One driver. And now all these years on we’re doing this together.”
