A RARE Lowry sketch of Daisy Nook Country Park is expected to fetch thousands of pounds when it goes under the hammer on Tuesday.

The pencil drawing is up for auction at Capes Dunn in Charles Street, Manchester, sold by an elderly private collector who bought it from a gallery in Belfast in the 1980s. The rare, previously unauctioned, work is expected to sell for upwards of £30,000.

The drawing includes hundreds of the “matchstick” figures for which LS Lowry is most famous, at the Failsworth beauty spot.

The sale contains many other Lowry works, including a signed print of Lowry’s famous painting “Going to the Match”, the original of which was sold to the Professional Footballer’s Association for £1.9million in 1999.

Michael Perry, of Capes Dunn, said of the sketch: “It’s certainly an important piece. Lowry did quite a lot of drawings of Daisy Nook and they are very well documented, so to have a new one come on the market is quite exciting. We’ve already had very strong interest from the people we’ve shown it to.
