DETECTIVES investigating the death of an elderly couple in Failsworth say they died in a freak tragic accident.
The 67-year-old man and his 66-year-old partner, named locally as Mary Murphy, were found dead at the foot of the stairs of the home in Ogden Road.
It is believed both fell down stairs and died from their injuries. The man - believed to be named John - fell first and his partner fell after rushing to help him.
Police have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances. Detective Inspector Lewis Hughes said: "This is an extremely bizarre, tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the couple’s family and friends at what is clearly a very upsetting and distressing time."
Police were called by ambulance staff following reports two people had been found dead.
The news of the deaths shocked the local area and residents described Mary, a retired office worker, as a “well-liked” member of the community. The man has been identified only as John, a friend of Mary’s.
One resident said: “It is very upsetting and we are in mourning. We knew them very well. The whole thing is very sad.”
