WITH a brand new bassist settling in nicely and an arm-full of new tunes, Oldham-based alt-prog rock trio Mother Kraken are confident they can make a big impact on the local scene before 2017 is up.

The dedicated band - frontman and guitarist Reece Warburton, bassist Alex Scott and sticks man Saul Gerrard - have been rehearsing hard at Shure 5 Studios in Royton and are looking forward to another positive stint at Liam Williams' popular Oddfellows Studio set-up.

Mother Kraken - who 'Crowdfunded' the release of EP 'One' last year - believe 2017's offerings are even better.

Warburton said: "We're a lot more confident about the next recordings.

"When we recorded 'One' last year we barely knew Liam. We'd only met three or four times and we weren't really connected.

"It was all very new, particularly for me.

"But we've been in again recently, working on 'You are Fractal' and we've got that coming out in a couple of months.

"The whole atmosphere is a lot better this time, everyone is so much more comfortable.

"We have a second EP written too, and that's probably 90 per cent ready to record.

"As soon as people say 'yes, we want to hear more of this' we will try and give them more."

Mother Kraken, who are heavily influenced by the likes of Rush, Mastodon, Coheed and Cambria, will also be heading out onto a live stage soon too, now that new bassist Scott appears to be settled into his new surroundings.

Leave

"We love Adam and it was unfortunate that he had to leave, but life goes on and you have to keep going," added Warburton.

"When we got Alex it was great.

"Considering the short amount of notice we gave him to come and join us, he really has been throwing himself at it.

"As soon as we said 'if you want to do it, you're in', he was straight onto us sending us photos of him learning the songs, cracking the bass out, and I was like 'wow, this guy is on it'.

"As soon as we've added maybe a couple of new songs to our set list and we're up to speed with them, or maybe even just halfway there, we'll start booking some gigs in."
