Our Jim is just the job

THE FRIDAY THING: IT should surprise no-one that Jim McMahon won the award for council leader of the year; it certainly came as no surprise to me.

Back in 2011, when Jim was a relatively new Labour councillor, we met for a chat and a bite to eat in a local restaurant.

Some of the big beasts of local politics had their eyes set on the council leadership; Jim was undecided whether to throw his hat into the ring.

My view was that the beasts had had their day and it was in Oldham’s long-term interests to have some new blood. Jim was just what Oldham in general and the Labour group in particular needed.

The rest, as they say, is history, and Jim has well and truly earned every accolade that has come his way. He has drive and vision, knows what Oldham needs and has the ability to put together partnerships that will continue to transform Oldham.

THERE was always something slightly bonkers about the Phoenix free school plan, to be staffed by former soldiers, sailors and airmen who were not qualified teachers.
It was the kind of experiment which promised a “grammar school” education with a strong emphasis on literacy, numeracy, sport, adventure, activities and competition — which all sounds very well.

What wasn’t well was the use of teachers who had no teaching qualifications. Not all teachers in all schools are brilliant educators, but, for better or worse, all teachers working in schools have at least been trained and are qualified to teach. I suspect it would have done more harm than good.
