We all need to be on our guard

THE FRIDAY THING:

THE murderous events in Paris last week should have alerted us on our side of the English Channel to the threat that terrorists could well turn their attention to the UK.

We are warned by security experts that there are 150 jihadists in the UK who could replicate the horrors that gripped France and they warn, too, of the risk of gun attacks of the kind that saw 17 people murdered in cold blood.

Well-armed jihadists returning from Syria are seen by security sources as serious threats to the peace and stability of the UK. Britain’s transport infrastructure — planes, trains, buses and the underground network — could well be vulnerable.

We all need to be on our guard. Though London would be the likely major target, there are many reasons for people living in towns, cities and villages across the UK to be vigilant.

The chance of terrorist attacks in the UK is regarded as severe and, without being reduced to blind panic, people right across the UK need to have their wits about them wherever they go.

FINAL WORD: Ed Miliband used to be undecided, now he’s not so sure. Four times he has refused to rule out forming a coalition with the Scottish National Party.

He also dithers whether or not he should join a party that has made no secret of its intention to break up the United Kingdom, despite the recent referendum vote.

You can rely on Ed, but only to make a mess of everything.
