A LOCAL animal rescue charity is facing an uphill battle to raise almost £70,000 to provide a better home for abandoned animals.

Pennine Pen Animal Rescue, Honeywell Lane, Oldham, has rehomed an average of 70 animals a year since 2001.

The centre neuters, vaccinates and microchips all the animals in its care and never turns its back on an animal in need. But to continue its valuable work it now needs help from the community.

Assistant manager Julie Flanagan said: “Our kennels need major refurbishment and are currently proving inadequate to cope with the demands of our rescue dogs.

“We have two kennel rooms that, if completely renovated, could increase our dog intake capacity from a maximum of 8 to a maximum of 12. Sheltered outdoor enclosures would also allow the dogs free time outside the kennels and provide daily exercise.”

To achieve its aims the charity needs almost £70,000. Grant applications have been successful - but only if the group can meet its overall total - and is £20,000 short.

Supporters can domnate unwanted items to its charity shops in Ashton Road and Troughgate, Hollins, or can donation online through Paypal (www.penninepen.co.uk).
